TITLE: "Daily Bread"
S-cripture
"You cause the grass to grow for the livestock and plants for man to cultivate, that he may bring forth food from the earth and wine to gladden the heart of all, oil to make their face shine and bread to strengthen the human heart.” (Psalm 104:14-15)
O-bservation
Each time we give thanks for daily bread it points us to something far richer than nourishment and sustenance. When we pause to pray and give thanks for what sits before us, we must resist thinking of this moment as ordinary, trivial, or forgettable. Every meal, God sets the table.
A-pplication
We will never be truly thankful for our daily gift of food if we do not treasure God more than food.
As God’s people we need to slow down and savor the majesty in our next meal. However incidental it may feel, the food ultimately points us to the Provider. Our food tells us His story. The food we eat each day helps us to truly anticipate the forever feast we will enjoy with him.
P-rayer
"God, give us this day our daily bread. For which I am eternally thankful. Amen."

Grace,
Pastor Brian

TITLE: "Praise the Lord"
S-cripture
"Praise the Lord, you his angels, you mighty ones who do his bidding, who obey his Word. Praise the Lord, all his heavenly hosts, you, his servants who do his will. Praise the Lord, all his works everywhere in his dominion. Praise the Lord, my soul.” (Psalm 103:20-22)
O-bservation
In today’s reading, the psalmist, David helps us by reminding himself (and us) of the irrevocable work God has done on behalf of His people, throughout their history.
David is moved. A heart that was faltering is now soaring. A deeply wrought gratitude now swells up to expression. He cannot keep it in.
A-pplication
Sin, pain, or sorrow can blind us to God’s present working and, occasionally, even the miraculous ways he's worked in our lives in the past.
When we speak to ourselves, we need to remind ourselves of what God has done for us in Jesus Christ. When the days are darkest, we need to speak to our souls and summon them up to praise the Lord.
P-rayer
"God, I will continually offer You praise today. Amen."

Grace,
Pastor Brian

TITLE: "Regarded by God"
S-cripture
"He has regarded the prayer of the destitute and has not despised their prayer.” (Psalm 102:17)
O-bservation
Today's reading addresses the day when God will establish His kingdom, and all the people of the earth will worship Him.
The psalmist also reminds us that God's ear is always open to the heartfelt prayers of His children.
A-pplication
We're not offered insight into what brought this time of turmoil to the psalmist's life. But the symptoms are things that we are all familiar with, can’t eat. Can’t sleep and feel alone. The psalmist was being harassed by his enemies, but he also believes that God is clearly sovereign over his problems.
By the close of this psalm, we are brought back to the reassuring theme that no matter what season of life or faith we may be in, God is constant in His righteous person and purpose.
P-rayer
"God, I thank You for Your righteousness, and godly purpose in my life. Amen."

Grace,
Pastor Brian

TITLE: "Mercy and Justice"
S-cripture
"I will sing of your mercy and justice; to you, Lord, I will sing praise. I will be careful to lead a blameless life—when will you come to me?” (Psalm 101:1-2)
O-bservation
In today’s reading, the psalmist, David, is singing of both mercy and judgment. To say that God only acts in mercy would be to present Him in the wrong light, for He must respect His own standard of justice even when He is merciful. Both the Old and New Testaments present ONE God Who acts in both mercy and judgment.
A-pplication
God is a god of both mercy and judgment. Mercy is our desire to act in kindness. Judgment is our ability to discern truth in our lives. As God’s people these elements of His divine nature, are things that we should exalt in, and also reproduce in our own living.
There is a quiet cry to God that He come to David’s aid in living out the commitments he has made.
Certainly, we cannot keep these commitments without God’s help, and cries of faith must always attend our commitments. For that matter, we cannot make a single commitment to do good without a constant reliance upon God for His grace to enable us, and His wisdom to guide us.
P-rayer
"God, I need You to discern how mercy and judgment are to unfold in my life. Amen."

Grace,
Pastor Brian

TITLE: "God Will Answer"
S-cripture
" Lord our God, you answered them; you were to Israel a forgiving God, though you punished their misdeeds. Exalt the Lord our God and worship at his holy mountain, for the Lord our God is holy.” (Psalm 99:8-9)
O-bservation
The emphasis in the last portion of today’s psalm is the nearness of this holy God, as He responds to the cries of a people in distress. Verse 8 says, “Lord, you answered them and forgave them.” This is a reason for praise, which is what makes up verse 9. It is an invitation for the people praying this psalm to call upon the Lord to receive help and forgiveness.
A-pplication
In the ancient world, it was not always assumed that a god would answer a call from that god’s people.
The desire of the psalmist is that his readers have a complete understanding that God remains King. That He is both powerful and mighty. But God is also a lover of justice and righteousness. He cares about whether or not those things happen within His creation.
P-rayer
"God, I know that You will answer those who call out to You. Amen."

Grace,
Pastor Brian

TITLE: "I Will Rejoice"
S-cripture
"Rejoice in the Lord, O you righteous, and give thanks to His holy name.” (Psalm 97:12)
O-bservation
The psalmist is convinced that when we consider the greatness of God and the goodness of God in regard to His people, it is only right for us to rejoice in Him.
A-pplication
Many Christians fail to adopt the thoughts of the psalmist in v. 10. Instead, we choose to try to manage evil’s presence in our lives. We bring it out when it suits us, and at times we even make excuses for its presence. We put forth the idea that since we can’t escape the reality of evil, then the best we can do is try to manage it appropriately.
This is self-deception. Wickedness cannot be managed! As soon as we have a single evil thought, we’ve sinned.
Righteousness requires a 180-degree turn, so we head in the opposite direction from evil. When we learn to hate evil, we learn to love what God loves.
P-rayer
"God, I will rejoice in You today. Amen."

Pastor Brian
