M&M Trip Update
Mission Work: Day 3 (COVID on M&M)
Andrew, Lindsay and Lauren stayed at CLF to paint the kitchen. After scrubbing the walls, we repainted the walls a brighter white.
The rest of the group went back to the church with graffiti and finished painting. After mission work today we all returned back to CLF to prepare for the concert that night. However, we were hit with the news that Miles (our fearless leader) had tested positive for COVID. He went into isolation and we began to prepare for the future days of the trip. Our concert was outside and we wore masks, and our mission work was not around other people, so we decided to continue the trip as normal, masking anytime we left the church building.
Our concert was at a women’s shelter. We did a modified version of our set list, and opened up a "petting zoo" for the children to play with the keyboard and hand bells. Our group is a little shaken up but we are still looking forward to doing the most good we can.

Mission Work: Day 2
Today we split up to three different mission sites. The first group returned to the painting site, and finished scraping the walls. Their work was tiring and they were in direct sunlight for the majority of the time. They just began painting at the end of the work day!
The second group returned to the Carpenter Shop Worship Arena and worked on reinforcing some wooden posts and mowing the rest of the tall prairie grass. After lunch they returned to CLF and started prepping the kitchen to paint.
Finally, the third group went to Jack’s greenhouse and helped restore the sheets on top of his underground garden. They worked on stapling pieces together and mounting them to the ceiling. They made friends with all of the snakes and bugs as well!
Tonight we had a concert at Trinity Episcopal Church. We were able to perform and then eat cake and socialize with the attending families afterwards! Burt and his family, along with his newborn, came to the concert and we were able to discuss more customs and traditions with them as well!

Our group split into two groups for mission work today. The first group went with Burt to remove graffiti from the outside of a church building. They started by scraping the sides of the building to prepare for the paint we brought. They were able to visit with many of the local residents in the neighborhood, and several even stopped to thank us for our work. Burt took our group the site of Chief Spotted Tail’s grave and explained the importance of its location and legacy.

The second group went to the site of a new church named the Carpenter Shop. Steve (the music leader) and his late mother had a vision from God of this new church and are in the process of building it. We were working in the worship arena, which is a circular outdoor space for dancing and festivals. The circle resents the life of the Lakota and the east side of the structure is left open (due to the belief that is where “the creator” enters). We worked on repairing the tin roof, while other mowed the overgrown weeds and trimmed trees. We are looking forward to another great day of work tomorrow!

M&M Trip day 3:

Concert Day! We had two concert today and our music people are exhausted! Our first concert was at our host church. We started with a fellowship and Sunday school time with the congregation, then we performed our setlist and script. We shared lunch and headed out pretty quickly towards our second location, which was a church with no plumbing or AC. In the 103 degree heat, this concert was defiantly a challenge! However, the church had beautiful acoustics and we were treated to a buffet afterwards! It was so fun to hear stories from the Grandmas as well as try some authentic Lakota foods. They gifted the dads little goodie bags with to***co for Fathers Day, which they explained was for prayer, not smoking. Finally, at night we took a Dream Catcher class from Burt, a great-great-grandson of Chief Spotted Tail. We start Mission work tomorrow so we are looking forward to a good nights sleep!

Here is the saturday post from M&M Trip 2022

Sightseeing Day! Today we left early in the morning for the Badlands. We took a mile long hike, up a wooden ladder, around cliffs which led to a beautiful overlook. Several in our group chose to explore off-the-path rocks structures, which scared our adults a little more then they would have liked! We then headed to Wall Drug and ate lunch with Jack Moore and other church staff. From there we headed to Wind Cave. We took an hour long trek through the complex cave systems, exploring the narrow pathways and rock formations. We learned that an average human can fit through tiny crevices that triggered slight claustrophobia in some members of our group! Wind Cave is a sacred place for the Lakota people, as it is believed to be the portal which their ancestors entered this world from the spirit world. It was hot and tiring, but we had an amazing time!

After 2 years of not being able to go, it’s super exciting to get back on the road with our 2022 Mission and Music Trip to the Rosebud Reservation!
Here is our overview of Friday June 17:

We have arrived! After we settled in we were able to talk with Father (or Padre) John Willard, who we will be serving with this week. He told us about the changes he has seen over the last 6 months on the reservation, and cultural customs that stick out to him. Then we were joined by Jack Moore who led our vespers for the night. He gave us a lesson on the history of White Eagle Christian Academy and Christian Life Fellowship (where we are staying). He told us about cultural customs as well as reminded us of our purpose while in Mission, South Dakota. We are looking forward to the week ahead!
