St. Johns Lutheran Ottertail

St. Johns Lutheran Ottertail St. Johns Lutheran Church is a member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. And that is what we, by God’s grace in Christ Jesus celebrate here at St. and ed.

“Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow,” wrote the hymn writer Thomas Ken as he pondered the hundred and fiftieth Psalm. John’s Lutheran—God’s undeserved, unspeakable blessings. Since the founding of this parish in 1885 God’s people have congregated around Word—Pulpit, Font, and Altar to receive the free gifts our crucified and ascended Lord Jesus Christ distributes. Through these means Jesus’

shed blood forgives the guilt of our sins and strengthens us to live a life pleasing to Him. In Church we are primarily though not exclusively passive. As Jesus said; “… the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Mk 10:45). In the Divine Service on Sunday morning, the Divine, Jesus, serves us with all the treasures of heaven. Before God our faith is passive as it receives gifts from Jesus. However, before our neighbor our faith is to be active as it gives gifts in loving service. As Martin Luther wrote:

Oh, faith is a living, busy, active, mighty thing, so that it is impossible for it not to be constantly doing what is good. Likewise, faith does not ask if good works are to be done, but before one can ask, faith has already done them and is constantly active. … Faith is a vital, deliberate trust in God's grace, so certain that it would die a thousand times for it. And such confidence and knowledge of divine grace makes us joyous, mettlesome, and merry toward God and all creatures. Solid Declaration, IV, in The Book of Concord: The Confessions of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, trans. Theodore Tappert (Philadelphia: Fortress, 1959), 552-553:10-12. Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow! John’s one hundred and twenty-fifth anniversary is a special time of celebration. As we honor Christ’s faithfulness to us we seek to serve our neighbor as Jesus serves us: generously and cheerfully. With warm regards,
