“Love makes us courageous.”

I know that's true for me. I will do things for people that I love that I would never have the courage to do in other circumstances. Love empowers us. Love strengthens us. But the question God won't let us get away from is this –do we love the neighbor that we don't know, who may look different than us, who may see things very differently than us, equally enough to make us do things that might frighten us? Am I as willing to protect my immigrant neighbor as I am, say, my granddaughter? And that is a tough question indeed. Maybe none of us can say we are as passionately willing. But all of us can choose to let love make us courageous enough to stand up for any human being made in the image of God. The greatest of these is love. How courageous does the greatest thing make you and me?

Psalm 30.11 You changed my wild lament into whirling dance.
You ripped off my black mourning band and decked me with wildflowers.

I love the imagery here. It’s not just happiness or pretty things. It’s whirling dance! Wildflowers! There is such joy in that picture. Such wild, chaotic, generous love from God toward us. We are set free to whirl and run. If you’ve spent time with lament and mourning, know that there is dance. I don’t know when. I can’t promise any of that. But I know who made this promise, and I know God is faithful.

May the joy of the Lord wash over you today. Have a wonder-filled sabbath.

Pool Party! What water has to do with a bubbling faith. Tomorrow, we’re talking about water. And we're not just going to talk about it –we're going to have a party with it. We believe the world needs hope more than just about anything.

We believe a lot of things at Real Hope Community Church, but as our name implies, hope is right there at the top. Some days it feels like it's bubbling up all around us, and some days it feels like it's on the brink of extinction. But we firmly believe in hope. We absolutely trust in it. And we know it does not disappoint. That's why we are Real HOPE Community Church.

“Of all the people Jesus could have revealed his identity too, he chose a Samaritan woman during a 700-year-old racial feud. Jesus is trying to tell us something. He is a barrier breaker.”

That's just like Jesus. Sometimes he is cryptic, but he is not typically subtle. When he wants to make a point, he makes it. The point he makes with the Samaritan woman is that deciding we don't want to be around other humans made in the image of God just because of their race, gender, language, legal status, sexuality, economic status, or anything else is not an acceptable choice for those who want to follow the way of Christ. He deliberately chose to put his trust in this woman when he knew it was, to say the least, an unpopular opinion. He chose it anyway. He chose it because. Jesus breaks down walls that we build with our fear.

Gods are not for sale.
I swear I’ll never treat God-names like brand-names.
Psalm 16.4

Right now, isn’t it good to know that, no matter what you see around us, God cannot be bought and sold to the highest bidder? God doesn’t have a price tag for special access? We can’t pick and choose who is God—either God is God or not. But that means we also don’t have to accept someone else’s claim that they speak for God unless they show us that Jesus’ teachings are clear in their lives.

Don’t treat God like something you choose off a shelf of offerings. And don’t fall for anyone else telling you that you can.
