St. Mary of the Assumption Parish & Shrine - Oswego, NY

St. Mary of the Assumption Parish & Shrine - Oswego, NY St. Mary of the Assumption is the official Marian shrine of the Diocese of Syracuse and a personal parish dedicated to the classical Roman Rite.

It has been in the pastoral care of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest since June 2025. Mary of the Assumption Parish is a personal parish for the Extraordinary Form of the Mass and is also dedicated to encouraging a great devotion to the Blessed Mother through the Rosary and the Brown Scapular. On August 15th, Bishop Douglas Lucia elevated the status of the Church for the Parish to

that of a Diocesan Shrine. According to Church law, a shrine is “a church or other sacred place which, with the approval of the local Ordinary [bishop], is frequented by the faithful as pilgrims by reason of a special devotion”. As a diocesan shrine, both the Extraordinary Form of the Mass and the Ordinary Form of the Mass are celebrated. Mary’s was fully consecrated in 1925 when the Church building itself was marked with 12 indelible marks and raised in perpetuum to a higher order, removing it from the malign influence of Satan, and marking it as a Sacred place where abundant graces flow. With the new dedication as a diocesan shrine, it is further a place of prayer, adoration of Our Lord, and devotion to Our Blessed Mother. We invite all parishes and groups of all ages to plan a pilgrimage to the shrine. Pilgrimages consist of a Holy Hour and access to confession. In addition, Holy Mass, a guided tour, presentation, and refreshments can all be arranged to meet your groups specific focus. Please contact Kristie Pauldine at [email protected] for more information or to schedule a pilgrimage. Remember, “Mary is the safest, easiest, shortest, and most perfect way of approaching Jesus.” – St. Louis De Montfort

The Great Easter Vigil:

The most solemn and beautiful ceremony of the Church's year begins on Saturday April 4th at 3pm at St. Mary's Shrine. Join us in celebrating Our Lord's triumph over sin and death!

We begin with blessing of the new fire and the Exultet followed by the prophecies and the baptisms of our catechumens. After the Litany of the Saints, the ceremony concludes with Holy Mass and Vespers. Booklets will be provided to help all those attending to follow the ceremony.

Holy Week is the summit of the Church's liturgical year. The whole week gives us a special opportunity to celebrate the mysteries central to all Masses which we attend throughout the year, namely the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ. As Catholics, we should endeavor to attend these ceremonies in as far as that is possible.

The "Learning the Liturgy" Talks now focus on the Liturgy of Holy Week. If you want to get the most out of Holy Week this year, these talks are for you.

You do not need to have attended the previous talks to attend. All are welcome.
