Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers

Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers offer compassion, relief, and the message of God’s love to the poor and suffering worldwide. The call can be anywhere.

We are a community of Catholic missionaries serving overseas in 22 different countries of the world. We are an American Catholic organization that has reached out for more than 100 years to those who are most in need. The Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers look to Jesus to feed the hungry, heal the sick and reach out to outcasts. Culture, language, religion, or tradition does not matter. No matter whe

re we are around the globe, we are all part of the human family. Compassion is at the heart of all the ministries of the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers. We provide life-giving medicines, nutritious food, blankets, or something as simple as a glass of clean water . . . it is compassion at work. We live with the poor and powerless. We work combating poverty, providing healthcare, building communities and advancing peace and social justice - all as a living mission outreach from the Catholic Church of the United States. We are proud of what we have been able to accomplish. Currently, we serve in 22 countries and 83 cents out of every dollar donated to Maryknoll goes directly to our work.

Andrew T. Vink as they discuss Common Evil: Political Economy and the Ethics of Liberation

https://orbisbooks.com/products/common-evil-political-economy-and-the-ethics-of-liberation

Common Evil: addresses a malignant hopelessness that has overtaken our society through a theological analysis that emphasizes concrete manifestations of ideology in history. Part of the struggle of understanding the malaise of our society is a difficulty in connecting the abstract concepts of sinful social structures such as racism, sexism, and neoliberal capitalism to the concrete realities that we experience daily. The common evil, developed from Ellacuría’s theological work, provides a language to start making these connections. As we become able to identify and understand these connections, we are able to participate in critical praxis towards alleviating the suffering created by common evil.

Andrew T. Vink holds a PhD in systematic theology from Boston College and master’s degrees in theology and philosophy from Marquette University. A Roman Catholic, Vink has served as adjunct professor at Mount St. Mary’s University and lecturer at Marymount University.

This Earth Day, help plant seeds of life in Kenya. 🌍🌱

In drought-stricken regions of Kenya, many families rely on subsistence farming to survive — but with little rain, crops are failing and food insecurity is growing.

This Earth Day, you can make a real difference. Your gift will help provide drought-resistant maize and bean seeds to farmers and herders working to sustain their families, strengthen their communities, and protect their future.

Join Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers in planting seeds of hope and new life.

Join Robert Ellsberg, publisher of Orbis Books, in this One On One interview with Wes Howard-Brook as they discuss Creation or Empire: A Choice of Religions in the Bible and Beyond

https://orbisbooks.com/products/creation-or-empire-a-choice-of-religions-in-the-bible-and-beyond

“If we study Wes’ brilliant insight to the Bible, we will not only want to join the biblical lineage of nonviolent resistance to empire with all our hearts, but discover anew the living God of universal love and peace who calls us to a new world of peace.”—Rev. John Dear, author, The Gospel of Peace

“This book is a clarion call and a summons. To choose Creation over Empire is not a moral decision. It is to decide what kind of world will live in us. The gospel is not neutral—it is a jailbreak, a holy uprising against every system that cages the imagination that belongs to God. Creation or Empire extends that vision to the whole world.”—Rev. Lynice Pinkard, UCC Philadelphia area pastor

“Creation or Empire delivers a template showing how Christians can live a religion of creation story today!” —Angela N. Parker, PhD, Mercer University

Wes Howard-Brook is the author of several award-winning books, including “Come Out, My People!” God’s Call out of Empire in the Bible and Beyond and Empire Baptized: How the Church Embraced What Jesus Rejected, 2nd-5th Centuries. He collaborates in the ministry Abide in Me with his wife Sue Ferguson Johnson. His YouTube channel, Radical Bible (https://radicalbible.net), is a word-by word, video biblical commentary.

Where is God at work in our world today?

In the Spring 2026 issue of Maryknoll Magazine, we examine how cuts to U.S. foreign aid have impacted a major AIDS relief program launched decades ago in Kenya by Maryknoll missioners, while in another article, we visit an AIDS hospice started by Maryknoll sisters that provides care and shelter to patients in Guatemala.

We continue our coverage of immigration with a look at the Church’s clear opposition to mass deportation and the mistreatment of migrants. We meet the latest group of Maryknoll lay missioners, accompany young adults on a pilgrimage to Rome, and share other mission stories from around the world.

Today, Good Friday, and we come to our final reflection of this 2026 Lenten Reflection series. Deacon Victor Mutobera, M.M., provides this meditation on the Fourteenth Station: Jesus' Body Is Removed From The Cross:

The tomb is not the last word. When the stone is rolled to the tomb, it seems all is finished. The hopes are thwarted away. It is, however, in that dark tomb that God is making what will become historical in our salvation. Those darkest moments are when God is preparing wonderful things for us. Especially when a loved one is buried, and the house feels empty, when treatment ends, but healing has not come, and when we are forced to wait without clarity and control. May we remember that what is buried is not abandoned. A reminder of our baptism when we died with Christ, were buried with him, and raised as a new creation. May the tomb be a transformative encounter with God.

Lord, when the stone seems sealed, and all hope feels buried—when graves are closed, homes grow silent, healing delays, and endings leave us waiting—remind us that the tomb is not the last word and that You are at work in the darkness.

Join Robert Ellsberg, publisher of Orbis Books, in this One On One interview with John Dear as they discuss: Universal Love: Surrendering to the God of Peace

https://orbisbooks.com/products/universal-love-surrendering-to-the-god-of-peace

This book arose from a young man’s request that John serve as his spiritual director. He did not believe in God, but he believed in “love and truth and compassion.” John replied that those are all names for God, and they agreed that they would speak of Universal Love. From this beginning, John discovered a new understanding of spirituality, and his own life of peacemaking as an exercise in “surrendering to the God of Peace.” In short reflections, he outlines what this means, offers practical exercises, and shows how this might lead us more deeply into the meaning of discipleship in a world of violence and conflict.

Rev. John Dear is a priest, long time peace activist, lecturer, and author of 40 books including The Gospel of Peace. He is the founder and director of www.beatitudescenter.org and offers a weekly podcast, “The Nonviolent Jesus Podcast.” Visit www.johndear.org.
