“The ways of the Lord are wonderful!” – Mother Frances Streitel
Today, we celebrate Foundress Venerable Mother Frances Streitel’s birthday.
Born on November 24, 1844, and baptized Amalia Frances Rose Streitel, she was the first child of Adam and Franziska Horhammer Streitel. The Streitel Family had a sincere love for God and neighbor and cared for the poor, sick and needy.
Amalia was called to enter religious life in 1862 and entered the Franciscan Institute of Maria Stern in the autumn of 1866, taking the name Sister Angela. Desiring a deeper spiritual connection with God, she entered the Carmelite cloister in January, 1882. While praying in the choir she received a vision to unite the active Franciscan life with the Carmelite contemplation in some way.
Shortly after she had her vision of uniting the active life with the contemplative, a new pathway emerged. Father Francis Jordan asked Sister to collaborate with him in the establishment of the women’s branch of his new foundation whose goal was Christian education. Mother Frances arrived in Rome on February 16, 1883 and chose the name Sr. M. Frances of the Cross. Throughout two years of closely working together, it became apparent that Father Jordan and Mother Frances had different visions of their charism and decided to separate into distinct religious orders. The Congregation of the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother was thus formed, with Sr. M. Frances of the Cross as its foundress and first superior.
The Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother live out Mother Frances' vision today with their care for the poor and dedicated spiritual lives.
