If God’s standard is holiness, none of us should walk away from Romans 2 thinking:

“I need to build a better moral résumé.”

That misses the point.

We cannot earn our way into God’s favor.

We cannot erase our guilt.

We cannot make ourselves righteous by comparing ourselves with somebody worse.

That is why Jesus Christ came.

He lived the righteousness we have failed to live.

He bore the judgment sinners deserve.

He died and rose again.

And everyone who turns from sin and trusts Him receives forgiveness and the righteousness we could never produce for ourselves.

Then the Spirit begins changing us.

Grace does not merely forgive.

Grace produces a new life.

Here is a question worth sitting with:

If God’s judgment is perfectly fair, what happens to our excuses?

No comparison with somebody else.

No religious résumé.

No family heritage.

No “but I meant well.”

No carefully managed image.

Romans 2 says God shows no partiality.

That is sobering.

But it also helps us understand why the Gospel is so precious.

We do not need a better excuse.

We need a Savior.

One of the easiest ways to feel righteous is to choose the standard.

“I’m not as bad as him.”

“I would never do what she did.”

“At least I go to church.”

“I try to be a good person.”

But Romans 2 removes every self-made measuring stick.

God sees perfectly.

God knows completely.

God judges impartially.

And that is precisely why we need grace.

The Gospel is not good news because reasonably decent people needed a little help.

The Gospel is good news because guilty sinners needed a Savior.

What excuse do people most commonly use to convince themselves they are right with God?

Most of us carry around a personal moral code.

We know what we think makes somebody a “good person.” And if we are not careful, we write the rules in a way that leaves us looking pretty good.

Romans 2:6–10 takes that standard away.

God does not judge us by comparison.

He does not grade on religious labels, good intentions, or the rules we have written for ourselves.

His judgment is righteous. His knowledge is complete. His standard is holy. And He shows no partiality.

Today on Foundations of Truth, we talk about judgment according to deeds, why that does not mean salvation by works, and how real saving faith produces real evidence in a changed life.

This is one of those passages we cannot afford to misunderstand.

Romans 1 exposes something in all of us.

We have not merely broken some rules.

We have exchanged God’s glory.

We have loved created things more than the Creator.

We have wanted God’s gifts while resisting God Himself.

And that is why we need more than advice.

We need a Savior.

Jesus Christ came for sinners.

He lived the righteousness we have failed to live.

He bore our sin at the cross.

He died and rose again.

And everyone who turns from sin and trusts Him is forgiven and reconciled to God.

The Gospel does more than rearrange your priorities.

The Gospel brings you back to the God you were created to know.

That is where Romans is taking us.

And that is why we keep opening this book together on Foundations of Truth.

We spend a lot of time trying to explain ourselves, defend ourselves, and soften the truth about ourselves.

But our greatest need is not a better excuse.

Our greatest need is a Savior.

That is the good news of the gospel. Jesus Christ did not come for people who could justify themselves. He came for sinners who need mercy, grace, and forgiveness.

If you are weary of carrying your sin, your shame, or your failures, stop looking for a way around them and come to Christ.

He is the Savior we need.

Sunday morning is a good time to remember what Romans 1 says about worship.

We were made for the Creator.

But sin takes the gifts of God and asks them to do what only God can do.

Career.

Money.

Relationships.

Comfort.

Success.

Politics.

Approval.

Even family.

These can all be good gifts.

But none of them can bear the weight of being our god.

Paul says humanity “worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator.”

That exchange is still happening.

So before this day gets busy, ask yourself:

What am I asking a created thing to give me that only God can give?

Idolatry does not always begin with something evil.

Sometimes it begins with something good that becomes ultimate.

A career becomes more than work.

A relationship becomes more than love.

Money becomes more than provision.

Comfort becomes more than rest.

Success becomes more than stewardship.

And eventually we begin asking created things to give us identity, security, meaning, or worth.

Romans 1 calls that an exchange.

The creature takes the place of the Creator.

There is always a point sometime on Saturday when my mind begins turning pretty seriously toward Sunday.

I have been preaching for a long time now, but I still feel the weight of standing in front of people with an open Bible.

Tomorrow is not about trying to say something impressive.

It is about opening God’s Word, explaining what it says, pointing people to Christ, and trusting the Holy Spirit to do what only He can do.

If you are part of Providence Church, I am looking forward to seeing you tomorrow.

If you are looking for a church family and a home, I recommend that you be our guest for 3 or 4 consecutive Sundays and you will be home.

And wherever you worship, pray for your pastor tonight.

Pray that he will preach the Word faithfully.

Pray that Christ will be exalted.

Pray that sinners will hear the Gospel.

Pray that believers will be strengthened.

Sunday matters. It’s the Lord’s Day.

Romans 1 does not leave us merely saying:

“People worship the wrong things.”

It goes deeper.

We have exchanged the glory of God.

We have trusted created things.

We have wanted God’s gifts while resisting God Himself.

And that means our problem cannot be solved by simply trying harder to become more religious.

We need a Savior.

That is where Romans is going.

The God whose glory we have exchanged is the God who loved sinners enough to send His Son.

Jesus lived the righteous life we have not lived.

He bore sin at the cross.

He rose from the grave.

And everyone who repents and trusts Him is forgiven and reconciled to God.

The answer to idolatry is not merely removing one idol and replacing it with another.

The answer is returning to the Creator through Jesus Christ.
