A LOOK AT LENT IN PANDEMIC TIMES
A year after churches were closed for public worship just in the third week of Lent, Catholics face another Lent during pandemic times. As we embrace the Cross during the Lenten season, God also gave us the pandemic to embrace the Cross as we receive it. Now a year later, we are offering ourselves to God in this humbled state, perhaps understanding our focus is about the essentials—about God among us and how we live the glory of that Gift each day, said Bishop John Noonan...Read more → https://bit.ly/3rKctcA

Advent’s darkness leads to Christmas light!

In the nighttime of Advent, the dreams of Joseph are sanctified by the presence of an angel who tells him to be unafraid as God’s plan unfolds and he comes to a deeper trust in God!

Joseph is the one who reassures Mary that she no longer has reason to fear since the child to be born will be “God with us” and the child’s very name, Jesus, means that “he will save his people from their sins.”

Together, Joseph and Mary, share in a unique and treasured role in salvation history. They, like us, are to be unafraid and to trust that the day of the Lord will dawn in splendor!

Thus, as we prepare to celebrate that day already accomplished in the mystery of the Nativity, we also yearn for the day that is yet to come when he will come again in glory and majesty. For the One who came, and who is to come, makes human flesh holy. In Him is the fulfillment of time and creation.

And so we come. Knowing that the Mystery of the Nativity leads to the Paschal Mystery, we call out: “Come, O Come, Emmanuel” and save us from our sins!

Advent is different each year. In a world of change and broken promises, it proclaims God’s constant and abiding presence amid the fragile climate of our bruised lives. It is a season that renews our hope!

God meets us at the intersections of our lives, in struggles and tensions, choices and decisions, joys and sorrows. God strengthens feeble hands, weak knees, and frightened hearts. He opens the eyes of the blind, the ears of the deaf, and gives us reason to leap like a stag, to sing and to dance! He guides our hearts and the hearts of others to rejoice in goodness and love.

God reassures us that it is He for whom we are searching. We see in him God made visible in the Jesus, his only-Begotten Son!

And so we come. Trusting in the mystery of his presence, we call out: “Come, O Come, Emmanuel” and save us from our sins!

Advent is a season whose meaning is multilayered. The prophet Isiah speaks of shooting sprouts from stumps, lions and lambs sharing peaceful rest together, and great manifestations of the Holy Spirit!

From our broken and hostile lives comes forth a change in the direction in which our hearts and minds were previously journeying. Little by little, we “ripen” and mature in our preparation for the celebration of the nativity and for the coming of the Lord again in glory and majesty.

Our God is a God of mystery, wonder and surprise! In Him we discover the satisfaction of our own true and holy yearnings. In God we discover “who” we are … and “who” we are summoned to be.

And so we come. Beneath the predictable commotion of this Advent season, we long for a glimpse of that which is yet to be, that which is both ancient and new, and we heed the cry of John the Baptizer from desert to repent our sins and to reform our ways as we call: “Come, O Come, Emmanuel” and save us from our sins!

Once again it is Advent. This joyful and holy season resets the clocks and the calendar. It summons us to the beginning...

Once again it is Advent. This joyful and holy season resets the clocks and the calendar. It summons us to the beginning where ancient promises are renewed and fulfilled!

The oracles of the Prophet point to the highest mountain top that we may see the Lord’s house established for all to see. Isaiah speaks of a dawn of a new peace where nations will walk together in harmony and peace, never more to raise a sword against another!

It is Advent. The joyful and holy season that resets the mind and the heart. It summons us to be caught up, once again, in the mystery of God’s love for us and for all of his creation!

The lavishness of God’s compassion and mercy frames all time, all hearts and all of history. We come, then, to attend to this mystery one more time.

And so we come. Clothed with the wisdom of the ages, inspired by the actions of the saints, and energized by the words of the prophets, we are pilgrims on the road to redemption, calling out: “Come, O Come, Emmanuel” and save us from our sins:
