The Church keeps only three birthdays on its calendar: Jesus, John the Baptist, and Mary. Every other saint is remembered on the day they died.

Hers is September 8. Count nine months back and you land on December 8, the Immaculate Conception — the calendar tells the story before a single word is spoken.

An ancient antiphon for the day puts it simply: let us celebrate the birth of the Virgin Mary, and adore her Son. She is the dawn. He is the day.

September 8 is also Our Lady of Charity of El Cobre, patroness of Cuba — sunflowers, yellow, and generations of families who never missed the date. And four days later, on September 12, the Most Holy Name of Mary. One week, two feasts.

Flowers before her image. A candle lit at dusk. The Rosary said out loud. Nothing elaborate — just the same things, year after year.

Monica prayed for her son for ten years.

Augustine was brilliant and restless — philosophy, status, pleasure, everything except the faith she raised him in. In 377 she dreamt of a messenger who told her, "Your son is with you," and she took him back into her home and kept praying. When he was 29 he sailed for Rome without saying goodbye. She had spent that night praying in a chapel. He left anyway.

She followed him to Milan. There, Ambrose's preaching reached what her arguments never could, and Augustine was baptized — ten years after the dream. At the port of Ostia she told him, "Nothing in this life now gives me any pleasure. So what am I doing here?" Days later she died.

He became a bishop and a Doctor of the Church, and he wrote his mother into the Confessions. Sixteen centuries later we still read her story in his words.

The Church remembers her on August 27, and him on August 28 — the mother one day before the son whose faith she prayed into being.

Ten years is not too long. Save this for the parent who is still praying.

Your Catholic week, August 17–23.

The Pope marked the Assumption in Castel Gandolfo and reminded us that Sunday is the foundation of the whole liturgical year — and that being there in person is not the same as watching a screen. At the Angelus he asked Our Lady's intercession for communities in need of consolation and hope. He also named something quiet and true: in many families, prayer is no longer being handed down. His remedy is simple — pray together.

In Jezzine, Lebanon, a crane lifted the Virgin above the crowd while a rosary made of balloons rose into the sky.

This week we celebrate St. John Eudes, St. Bernard, and St. Pius X. And on Saturday, August 22, the Church crowns Our Lady, Mother and Queen — eight days after the Assumption. Every crowned Virgin you have ever seen points back to that date.

We also celebrate St. Lawrence, St. Clare of Assisi, and St. Maximilian Kolbe, who gave his life for a stranger at Auschwitz.
