When we are hurt, angry, or afraid, we write stories in our hearts about someone else’s motivations, and then act upon them. The command to not give false testimony (Exodus 20:16) is all about character assassination. When there is a breach in a relationship, we turn up the volume on our feelings first so we might protect the tender part of us. Those front-facing emotions over-simplify complex issues, and write narratives about the others’ motivations to justify our betrayal. It’s a spiritual battle - Paul reminds us that unprocessed anger gives the devil an opening to distort our hearts. Satan reinforces the accusations we lodge against our friends. It grieves the Holy Spirit when we cut one another down with our words, because we are marring the image of God.
One of the quickest ways we bond with others is through gossip, uniting around a common enemy. We position ourselves as the hero; we paint others as a villain; and we create tribes based on mutual suspicion. This is contrary to the whole spirit of the Body of Christ.
