Who have you put in a box?

Maybe it’s the kid sitting alone at lunch. A neighbor who looks, acts, or votes differently than you.

Someone in our community we’ve labeled instead of seeing as a beloved child of God.

Jesus came to tear down all the boxes we keep putting people in. Because God’s love is too big, too wide, and too wonderful to fit inside our tiny religious boxes.

You don’t have to fit in a box to belong here. Come as you are and trust God with the rest.

Empty your box. Just like Jesus.

Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God; I will strengthen you; I will help you; I will uphold you with my victorious right hand.
- Isaiah 41:10 (The Inclusive Bible)

Voice of the day
Hope is a song in a weary throat.
- Pauli Murray

Prayer of the day
God of healing, fix what is broken, renew what is weary, and bring peace where there is pain. May your grace make us whole and may our hope be restored. Amen.

Is there someone in our community we've labeled instead of seeing as a beloved child of God?

Jesus came to tear down the boxes we keep putting people in, because God so loved the world. God's love is too big, too wide, and too wonderful to fit inside our tiny religious boxes.

Who might God be inviting you to see differently today?

Verse of the day
They have treated the wound of my people carelessly, saying, “Peace, peace,” when there is no peace.
- Jeremiah 6:14

Voice of the day
I will refuse normalization that asks us to forget or to sacrifice justice for a false calm. Yes to cooperation grounded in rights, truth, and justice. Anything less is not reconciliation; it is a postponement of the real work we must do together.
- Bisan Owda

Prayer of the day
Teach us the way to build a real foundation for ensuring a legacy of repair.

Verse of the day
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. - Matthew 5:9

Voice of the day
If we are serious about peace, then we must work for it as ardently, seriously, continuously, carefully, and bravely as we have ever prepared for war.
- Wendell Berry

Prayer of the day
Creator God, guide us in our labor as we work for peace, that we may be called your children.

Verse of the day
How very good and pleasant it is when kindred live together in unity!
- Psalm 133:1

Voice of the day
Unity in this sense is a threshold requirement for people to live in freedom and together in a free society. It is the solid rock, as Jesus said, in this case upon which to build a nation. It is not conformity. It is not victory. It is not polite weariness or passive passivity born of exhaustion.
- Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde

Prayer of the day
God who finds joy in our harmony, guide us toward the repentance and repair that must precede unity.

WHO WILL YOU INVITE?

On Sunday, October 18, we’re doing something special at our 9:00 AM Gospel Family Service.

We’re having brunch, but here’s the important part: the brunch really isn’t for us. It’s for the person who isn’t here yet.

Think of a neighbor, a friend, a coworker, or a family you know who may not have a church home. You don’t need a sales pitch. Just say, “Come to church with me, and then let’s have brunch together!”

We’ll provide the worship.
We’ll provide the music.
We’ll provide the brunch.
We’ll provide the welcome.

You provide the invitation.

Because this isn’t really about filling a room. It’s about opening a door. And you never know what God might do when you simply invite someone to walk through it.

Who will you invite?

Verse of the day
They will not hurt or destroy on all my holy mountain, for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.
- Isaiah 11:9

Voice of the day
If we allow sacred places to be destroyed for profit, we are saying that nothing is truly sacred. We are losing something essential about our humanity—our ability to respect Mother Earth, to honor what is holy, and to live in balance with the world around us.
- Dr. Wendsler Nosie Sr.

Prayer of the day
May we recognize places where your creation sings as holy ground and champion their right to thrive.

Verse of the day
She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.
- Proverbs 31:26

Voice of the day
They said she’d never see the day / We’d equal up to them / But here we are, we’ve come so far / I guess we sure showed them
- Dolly Parton, “19th Amendment” (2018)

Prayer of the day
God who regards everyone in the fullness of their being, empower us to recognize the good in each other.

Verse of the day
Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; steadfast love and faithfulness go before you.
- Psalm 89:14

Voice of the day
Bone-deep love calls us to live our lives out of the possibilities found in wholeness, self-reflection, justice, peace, a new heaven and a new earth, hope and not our shortcomings—that rest on greed, self-centeredness, avarice, coveting, despair.
- Emilie M. Townes

Prayer of the day
Holy One, show us how to remain anchored to a love unafraid to challenge and correct so we do not succumb to uninspired spitefulness.
