As we celebrate the Fourth of July and begin marking the 250th anniversary of our nation's founding, we give thanks for the blessings of freedom, community, and the hope of a more perfect union.

As Episcopalians, our celebration is also grounded in our Baptismal Covenant. We renew our commitment to "strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being." These promises remind us that love of country is strengthened by love of neighbor and by our shared calling to seek the common good.

May this Independence Day inspire gratitude for those who have come before us, courage to meet the challenges of our own time, and hope for the generations yet to come.

Today we honor Juneteenth, commemorating the day in 1865 when the last enslaved people in Texas received news of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. As people of faith, we give thanks for the gift of freedom and pray for a world where every person is treated with dignity, every voice is valued, and justice and opportunity are shared by all.

On this day in 2016 our city was greatly impacted by the act of violence at Pulse nightclub. Today, we remember the victims, survivors, and we pray for their families. May God restore to wholeness whatever is broken in our lives, in our nation, and in the world.

Our dear friends at the Cathedral will be holding a Requiem Eucharist to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Pulse tragedy. Canon Dan Smith will be preaching. We hope you’ll consider joining in remembrance, prayer, and support for all whose lives were forever changed.

Ten years after the Pulse Nightclub tragedy, we gather to remember, pray, and commend the departed to God’s eternal care. Join us for a Votive Requiem Eucharist in memory of the 49 victims. Canon to the Ordinary Dan Smith will preach.

All are welcome as we honor their memory and pray for healing, peace, and hope.
