A Poem- “Position Paper #53: National Archivist” by Andrea Lawlor

In the new place which will be also the old place we will save useful things neatly, with backups, but not too many, not too much. Everyone will train in some archives, teaching methods & learning our shared reverence for research which is reverence for knowledge which is reverence for community which is reverence for being which is reverence for this earth & all universes. We will keep kitchen archives & garden archives & comms archives & decisions archives & process archives & experiment archives & we will consult these archives when we need background or inspiration or instruction, or for pleasure, the great pleasure of the archive, the great archive of pleasure; we will call this art, how we spend our days & nights.

A Psalm- Proverbs 24:14

Know also that wisdom is like honey for you: If you find it, there is a future hope for you, and your hope will not be cut off.

GOD PAUSE- June 14

"There's a Wideness in God's Mercy" ELW 588

Our hymn (as edited for the ELW) invites us to expand our imagination beyond vast pastures or wide oceans. Perhaps in verse 3, lines 3 and 4, this hymn writer was considering the expansion of science in the middle of the 19th century, as naive as that may seem to us in the 21st century. Maybe we can take the images of the earth we again received from beyond the moon. More than that, astro-physics tells us that the universe is expanding faster than our best computations can count. This week’s key question from Psalm 100, how vast God’s creation, and who is included in God’s purview, have been leading us to the limitless grace of the One God. “Uni-verse” should invite us to live and proclaim, through song and word and deed, the one-ness of God’s infinite love and grace.

Thank you, O God, for minds that help us study your creation in its smallest details and its ever-expanding horizons. Open our hearts, transform our wills, so that all our relations, with nature and with humanity, may be permeated with your endless love. Amen.

A Poem, A Psalm and A Song- June 13

A Poem- “Quiet” by Janani Balasubramanian

years from now they’ll ask us if it was still—the Quiet?
and yes we’ll say, we were stirred but it was still.
stirred?
we were stirred, we learned the shape of our own ears
the soft animism of mortality
we looked at each other’s skin, from a distance,
and felt we could break at anything at all
a piercing thought even
we thought we’d lose everything, we thought we already had

so we were stirred.
but it was quiet?
but it was distillery-quiet

and there was fear in our hearts but the love
it was decanted and poured freely
we still chatter about it like it was honey
and we learned how to be kinder to bees

we called our grandmothers and asked them for videos
and they sent us anything at all
grass
ovaltine
and we told our friends we loved them
and we looked at our uncles from across the street
screens
hands on our hearts, and they melted.

from?
stillness, fullness, sweetness, whatever we had.
we learned how big we were and how small
like those girls who broke your whole heart?
nodding
so you could see where all the pieces were
how capacious it was, anything can belong in there
anything at all
like those girls. but a whole earth.

A Psalm- Colossians 3:12-13

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone.”

GOD PAUSE- June 13

"There's a Wideness in God's Mercy" ELW 588

The British hymnwriter and priest takes this week’s key question—how vast is God’s pasture?—to the vastness of the sea. (Verse 1, ELW version) Perhaps his experience of life in the British countryside saw stone walls dividing the land, desecrating the horizon. Perhaps he saw how that made our sense of God’s grace too limited. Even if we get to experience grand horizons on earth’s vast continents or oceans, we know we can yet measure the lands and waters of this globe—and transverse all with supersonic speed. Verse three calls us to make confession. We turn our ability to measure into a way of elevating myself and excluding others. Yes, I am one of God’s sheep; surely not they! By making the pasture more comfortable with my limits, have I placed myself outside of God’s grace? As in line two of verse one, only God’s immeasurable mercy will lead us to justice and liberty.

Thank you, O God, for experiences of awe and wonder. Open our hearts, transform our wills, so that we may also see this world and all its people in the light of your justice and mercy, liberty and grace. Amen.

A Poem, A Psalm and A Song- June 12

A Poem- “Bildungssonnet” by Billy-Ray Belcourt

To be saved by ideas: a fantasy I harbored.
In those days, there was always something
from which I needed saving. The past, its
expansive grammar, the way my grief was
a kind of deranged hope. I wanted a different
country, an old language to burst forth like
a hidden river. “Love is the cause of what
ails you,” wrote Lauren Berlant. Oof. Most likely,
no man is a refuge. But we can try all the same.

It is raining again. I’m struggling to remember
everything. Thank god: it is not too late to tell
a new story. Thank god: a sonnet is not that
deep of a chasm. Soon, I may climb out toward
the long expanse of our remaking.

A Psalm- Ecclesiastes 12:1

Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the days of trouble come and the years approach when you will say, ‘I find no pleasure in them.’
