GOSPEL REFLECTION MATTHEW 28:16-20

This reading, often called the Great Commission is the final appearance of the risen Lord to his disciples. Even in their doubt, Jesus meets them with encouragement. He entrusts them with the mission to evangelize.

What a big ask!

Don’t think it’s exclusive to them. He looks to us too to carry out such a work. We are called to spread the Good News, to participate in bringing others to the Catholic Church and salvation.

Because He has given the Church authority, we aren’t being asked to simply have faith, but to obey and abide by its teachings - that includes the institution of the priesthood and the Sacraments.

The Gospel ends with this:

And behold I am with you always, until the end of the age.

He doesn’t abandon us, not for a second. God is with us in the Eucharist, Confession, in the Scriptures, in prayer, He is everywhere.

He intentionally chose us to be the Easter people. He knows we’re imperfect and allows us to grow in holiness through the strengthening of our faith and that of others.

The question is are we living as disciples of Christ or of the world?

PENTECOST SUNDAY

This is a big day! 50 days after Easter, the Holy Spirit descends upon the apostles and Mary in the Upper Room, transforming them from fearful disciples to fearless saints. He empowers them to go out and proclaim the Gospel. It makes the beginning of their public mission to share the Good News and it’s also considered the birthday of the Church.

The same Spirit enters into our hearts, not to make us comfortable, but to make us holy.

To become disciples of Christ was never meant to be easy. It wasn’t meant to be kept quiet. To follow Him requires boldness, courage, and conviction.

On Pentecost, we see fire because our faith is meant to transform and illuminate a dark world.

We are called to be light and it’s only through the Church and the gifts of the Holy Spirit that we get to be beacons of hope.

Here’s a question for you to reflect on before Mass this morning:

Are you making way for Him to set you ablaze? Are you participating in the Sacraments that Christ instituted and left for us to tangibly experience His Body and Blood, forgiveness, healing, love, and mercy? Are you picking and choosing values that work for you or are you fully aligned with what the one, holy and apostolic Church teaches? Are you lukewarm of fully on fire for the faith?

Tough questions, but they are the same kind that were asked in that Upper Room.

Whatever your answers are, be honest and if they aren’t where they’re supposed to be, pray this:

Holy Spirit, come.

We close out the Easter season with Pentecost Sunday and we hope that for you the Resurrection hasn’t just been a single event that you celebrated over colored eggs. We pray it’s been 50 days of an ongoing encounter with the living God.

Even as we enter into ordinary times, we can’t forget what took place at the Last Supper, on the cross, in the tomb, and the days following.

He did all of that, so that we could be Easter people in a Good Friday world.

So keep loving as if Jesus saved you because He did and continues to.

Please pass this along to any young adults you know!

We don’t want May, the month of Mary to end without giving our young adults the chance to honor her, which is why we will be hosting a special night of Marian prayers.

This will take place at SJM in the church. It will go for about an hour and we’ll gather in the courtyard after for dinner.

So please, MYA, join us!!!

Let’s give our Mother the love she deserves🤍
