The First Unitarian Universalist Church of Essex County is a life-affirming liberal religious community that keeps an open mind to the religious questions people have struggled with at various times and places. And that in the end religious authority lies not in a book or person or institution, but in ourselves. At present, we are lay-led with no minister. We are experimenting with a monthly infor
mal discussion group to help us focus our faith activities within our church community. Please join us on the second Sunday of each between September and June at 5 PM for fellowship and conversation. Founded in Orange in 1890 as the First Unitarian Church of Essex County, the congregation has worshipped in the present Sanctuary since its construction in 1893. The Church continues the ministry of the Union Universalist Society, which was founded as the First Universalist Society of Newark in 1834. The church year is marked by many special events, from Ingathering in September to Flower Communion in June. Our congregation, like all Unitarian Universalist congregations, is self-governing. We elect officers and trustees annually. Membership is open to any person who is in sympathy with the purpose of the Church, which is the study and practice of religion in freedom and fellowship. Visitors are always welcome, and may sign up to receive the Church newsletter without becoming members. The expenses of the Church are financed in large part by voluntary pledges from members and friends. Beginning in 2015, First UU changed its focus from being a primarily parish ministry to an urban ministry. In this endeavor, our congregation established a subsidiary organization, called The HUUB, to bring UU Principles to life by building community and supporting the social justice work and happenings in the city of Orange, NJ. The HUUB's mission is to turn First UU into a community resource for the public to meet, discuss and organize to advance social justice, as well as to celebrate and make community among the people of Orange.
