Our Sacred Canopy is a tree planting program from California Interfaith Power & Light focused on increasing access to trees for those who need it most. A robust tree canopy has amazing health benefits for our planet and all living creatures. Caring for nature is a sacred responsibility, one that benefits our collective physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing.

Submit an interest form to see if your Congregation/Faith Community qualifies for free trees for the church/temple grounds. Or work with CIPL to have individuals and families receive trees to plant at their residential homes.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta released the California Department of Justice’s fifth report on conditions at immigration detention facilities operating in the state. The seven facilities operating in the state are run by private prison corporations under contracts with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). These include CoreCivic, the GEO Group, and Management and Training Corporation. During the inspections in 2025, the DOJ found that conditions had largely worsened as the mass deportation campaign has led to overcrowding and strained resources, especially around access to medical care and conditions of confinement. AG Bonta described the investigation findings as “cruel, inhumane, and unacceptable.”

This past Sunday, our Eco-Animators (in collaboration with the Family of Joseph and California Interfaith Power & Light), led a tree dedication and blessing of trees ceremony for 4 new trees in the St. Joseph Center Garden.

The blessing ritual was followed by Family of Joseph’s Summer Gathering focusing on the care for God’s creation. Children and adults alike enjoyed craft activities, a petting zoo, and delicious food. We were also joined by naturalist educators and beekeepers. And several families were able to take home a tree to plant in their yard!

June is Immigrant Heritage Month. This is a time for honoring the cultures, traditions, and stories that immigrants have woven into the fabric of this country. We honor the many contributions of immigrants to this country.

On June 5, National Gun Violence Awareness Day, we will to call attention to our nation’s preventable gun violence crisis, which takes nearly 47,000 lives every single year. We wear orange to honor survivors of gun violence and build community with those working to end gun violence. Why the color orange? Orange is the color hunters use to protect themselves and others.
