Jesus Loves the Little Children

One of the quiet but powerful ways Jesus is building His church at New Hope is through the faithful, steady ministry taking place in our classrooms each Sunday morning. The Lord has provided willing servant leaders for every grade level—men and women who shepherd young lives in the gospel. For the past twelve years, Liz Koenig has served our third graders, helping these children come to know the Lord through His Word.

Liz stepped into this role early in her time at New Hope. What began as shared teaching responsibility soon became a joy she fully embraced. Her heart for the Lord and her love for who she affectionately calls “little people” made the third-grade classroom a natural place for her to be planted. One of the most encouraging things Liz shares with her little people early in the school year is, “Sunday School is not simply a class…it is a Bible study. And this is my FAVORITE Bible study because we get to learn the Names of God!” Their time together is a treasured space where children open the Word of God for themselves and discover who He is.

Each year, Liz leads her students through the “How Majestic is Your Name” study by Truth 78 curriculum. Liz loves to highlight how, why, and where God has revealed His name so that we might truly know Him. The children learn that Scripture contains hundreds of names and descriptions revealing God’s character - all with the emphasis that the Eternal God (El Olam) names Himself. “Week by week, we learn one Name at a time, many in Hebrew, sometimes lingering on a single Name for nearly a month, because knowing God is not simply information but a relationship to grow in,” says Liz.

In their classroom, third graders learn how to find passages in their own Bibles. They learn the difference between chapter numbers and verse numbers, learning to keep their finger on the text until everyone is ready. These may seem like small things, but they are foundations that will serve them for a lifetime pursuit of truth. More importantly, they are learning that the Bible is not merely a collection of stories; it is God revealing Himself personally to them. One example of this is the class’s memory verse: “The Name of the LORD is a strong tower, the righteous run into it and are safe. Proverbs 18:10. Ask any third grader, and they can show you the actions to remember this significant verse,” encourages Liz, “and not only that, but they can tell you LORD is the Hebrew name for YaHWeH, the “fame name” of God which God uses to make Himself known, first to Moses and now to us!”

According to Liz, one beautiful picture is watching the eager student’s knowledge move from their heads to their hearts. Each week, the children pray using the Names of God they are studying. When a grandmother is sick, they remember that God is Jehovah Shalom: our peace. When they feel afraid, they learn to pray that He is Emmanuel: God with us. When they sin, they learn to turn back to Jehovah Rophe, the God who Heals. They are not simply memorizing names but also learning to trust the Name above all names.

It is a privilege to have a front-row seat to Jesus forming faith in young hearts. He teaches children that they are not alone. He gives them courage to pray aloud. He provides language to understand life itself. And He does this through the faithful obedience of Sunday school teachers who simply serve out of love for Jesus and love for His Word.

New Hope Church, this is how the body builds itself up in love. God’s Word is preached in the sanctuary and seeds are also planted in Sunday school rooms where little ones learn that God has revealed Himself because He desires to be known by them.

Take a walk by the children’s wing and peek into any classroom and you might see something deeper: Christ working through steady faithfulness. Twelve years of dumping out plastic balls to illustrate the vastness of God’s names. Twelve years of opening Bibles together. Twelve years of making resurrection rolls on Palm Sunday. Twelve years of “field trips” to deliver letters in church mailboxes to the sick. Twelve years of listening to prayer requests. Twelve years of reminding children that the God who reveals His Name also draws near to each of them.

Our prayer is that Jesus continues to move mightily in ordinary rooms, some (like the third grade room) filled with beanbag chairs and open Bibles, and because of these quiet, faithful classrooms and our teachers, generations will grow up knowing Jesus!

Some serve in year one, others find themselves serving in year fifty. The invitation is the same: How might the Lord be calling you to serve Him now? What could your next step of faithfulness look like whether it is year one, year fifty, or year twelve?

We hope that you may be sharpened and encouraged today by reading Kay’s story!

FRUITS OF FAITHFULNESS

Kay Hulst can see the spiritual imprint of God’s faithfulness all over her life. One of her favorite verses includes Isaiah 41:10 which states, “Fear not, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” In a fun-loving tone she remarks, “If I were to ever get a tattoo, it would be a small cross on my right wrist, to remind me that God is always upholding me.”

Many who know Kay know the joy of the Lord that radiates through her. She would say that joy is something that she continually pursues in life, in her own heart and in others. “I have seen joy revealed in my family,” shares Kay. “I see it in my grandkids and my children. It has been decades since I have been pursuing joy in the Lord.” She recalls that her pursuit of joy started when she became a believer. A fruit of God’s faithfulness in her life.

“Though I grew up in a Christian home,” shares Kay, “I did not receive Christ as my Savior until the age of 30.” Kay notes that although she knew a lot about the Bible, she did not fully know Jesus. She continues, “Through my answered prayers as an unbeliever for God to reveal Himself to me, God orchestrated circumstances in my life that led me to Him, as a broken sinner, pleading for forgiveness. I realized that our Lord’s perfect sinless sacrifice on the cross with His resurrection was my only hope.” Kay sees this as God’s faithfulness and notes that she has seen this play out generationally in her adult children and in her granddaughter Kenzie, who have gotten baptized. Fruit of God’s faithfulness.

Kay grew up in Rock Valley, met her husband Mark in 1973, and they married in 1975. They moved to Orange City in 1979, where Mark worked as a physical therapist and they raised their family. They experienced the normal ebb and flow of blessings and trials in life. The Lord carried them through challenges that included a near loss of one of their sons to febrile seizures, a cancer diagnosis for Mark in his 40’s, the challenge of two children traveling the world with YWAM, and a severe car accident that resulted in a head and neck injury for Kay. Fruit of God’s faithfulness.

Mark and Kay started attending New Hope in 2000. Kay shares that the friendships that they have developed through New Hope are dear. They have appreciated the deep prayer time, community, and care they have received over the years.

The Lord’s faithfulness was especially evident to Kay ten years ago when she had breast cancer at the age of 60. Kay shares that New Hope stood by them spiritually, emotionally, and physically in this time. She recalls how the pastors, elders, deaconesses, their life group, friends, and family supported them through prayer, meals, and visits. Kay notes, “It was a journey through the desert, but it was also the best thing for my soul. I took time with the Lord and got closer to Him than I ever had been. I read lots of Scripture, especially Psalms. When I read the Psalms, I felt like I was placed at a refreshing oasis. My other verses during that time included Psalm 91:4, 1 Tim. 4:17, Josh. 1:9, and Heb. 12:2. I had a real peace.” Fruit of God’s faithfulness.

Kay shares, “because of how God had shown me his faithfulness in my breast cancer journey and other trials, I knew we could rest in His faithfulness when Mark had heart surgery 2024 and that God would show His love and faithfulness again in future blessings and trials.”

May we each believe and pray these verses from the Psalms:
“I will praise you, O Lord, among the nations; I will sing of you among the peoples. For great is your love, reaching to the heavens, your faithfulness reaches to the skies. Be exalted, O God, above the heavens. Let your glory be over all the earth.” Psalm 57:9-10

Before and After

For many of us, we can think of a defining moment in our lives that seems to separate our lives into life before and after the moment. For Jeanne Van Roekel, the brain injury she suffered in February of 2020 after slipping on the ice and hitting her head did just that.

Changes and adjustments that have come from her brain injury have included short term memory loss, vertigo, vision struggles, balance issues, changes in personality, frequent headaches, and the need for years of various therapies. Albeit these challenges, common threads that have spanned Jeanne’s before and after her injury have been God’s unchanging faithfulness and the experience of personal connections with and support from others in her life.

The value and impact of developing personal relationships and connections is a thread woven throughout Jeanne’s life. In 2004, Jeanne and her husband, Orville spent six months in Thailand for Orville’s work. While they were in Thailand, they built a friendship with a young woman, Jutatip, who worked at a local restaurant that Jeanne and Orville would frequently visit. Jutatip and her family ended up moving to Iowa and visit Orville and Jeanne about once a year. “We,” says Jeanne of she and Orville, “have become like parents to Jutatip.”

Jeanne reflects on a time in her young adult life when she went through a more rebellious stage. Her father was an avid reader of the Bible. He encouraged Jeanne to read her Bible more, and when she turned from her rebellious ways, she remembers her father saying to her, “I knew you would come back.” Jeanne notes with gratitude, “my dad responded to me how God responds to us when we stray and then return home.”

Jeanne and her husband Orville found a sense of home at New Hope when they started attending three to four years ago. Jeanne shares how they felt so welcomed the first time they attended New Hope and notes, “We did not realize how hungry we were to hear the Word of God be preached.” She comments on how being a part of Life Groups and Bible studies has helped her develop relationships with other believers and to learn God’s Word.

Jeanne has also been encouraged by the intentional connections with and support that New Hope offers to local and global missionaries. “At New Hope,” shares Jeanne, “it is not just about going to church. It is about how you live your life. It is about preaching the Word from the Word. It is not a Sunday only thing, and it is not about being entertained. It is about personal connections and lessons on how to live that life.”

“A lot of good has come out of my brain injury,” comments Jeanne, “I would not change it. My short-term memory stinks, but I am so blessed to have my long-term memory. I know my family, my friends, my Lord, and I know that I love them. And I know they have come to love the ‘new’ me.” Jeanne is thankful for the ways the teaching and fellowship at New Hope have ministered to she and Orville, have helped them to continue to grow in their faith and find ways to live it out day to day in their interactions with others.

How has God used a before and after in your life to shape your faith?
