KEY PASSAGE
This is the Bible verse that relates to what your children studied during Sunday school this week and is good for memorization.

Romans 1:18

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.

SPARKLE

Have your family stand in a circle facing one another. The game travels around the circle with each person saying the next word to come in the verse. If someone says an incorrect word or does not know the next word they sit down. The verse continues around the circle until the final word is said and then the next person says “Sparkle!” to finish the verse. The person who says “Sparkle!” also sits down. Continue to play with other Bible verses your family has learned until there is only one person standing. That person is the winner.

We are continuing our study of theology with Theo and his friends Belfry and Luther. This week the children learned about the justification by exploring how to be declared not guilty by God through the story of how Barabbas was set free and Jesus was sent to the cross instead.

Bible references for this lesson include the following:
-Romans 3:23 (We all fall short of the glory of God.)
-Romans 8:10 (The Spirit is life.)
-Luke 18:9-14 (The Pharisee and the tax collector)
-Galatians 2:16 (We are not justified by works.)
-James 2:14-22 (Works are evidence of saving faith, justification.)

BIG PICTURE QUESTIONS
These are questions that help your children think about the Biblical truths that were taught during Sunday school this week.

PRESCHOOL & 1ST-3RD GRADES:
-What does every sin deserve?
The anger and judgment of God.
(Deuteronomy 27:26; Romans 1:18; 2:2; Galatians 3:10; Ephesians 5:6)
-Can anyone go to heaven with this sinful nature?
No. Our hearts must be changed before we can be fit for heaven.
(Jeremiah 31:33-34; Ezekiel 36:25-27; John 1:12-13; 3:1-10; 1 John 5:1, 4, 18)
-What did Christ undertake in the covenant of grace?
To keep the whole law for His people and to suffer the punishment due to their sins.
(Romans 8:3-4; Galatians 4:4-5; Hebrews 9:14-15)
-What did God the Father undertake in the covenant of grace?
To justify, adopt and sanctify those for whom Christ should die.
(Romans 8:29-33; Hebrews 10:9-10; 1 Corinthians 1:8-9; Philippians 1:6; 1 Thessalonians 4:3, 7)

4TH-6TH GRADES:
-Wherein consists the sinfulness of that estate whereinto man fell?
The sinfulness of that estate whereinto man fell, consists in the guilt of Adam's first sin, the want of original righteousness, and the corruption of his whole nature, which is commonly called original sin; together with all actual transgressions which proceed from it (Romans 5:12 to the end; Ephesians 2:1-3; James 1:14-15; Matthew 15:19).
-What is the misery of that estate whereinto man fell?
All mankind by their fall lost communion with God (Genesis 3:8. 10. 24), are under His wrath and curse (Ephesians 2:2-3; Galatians 3:10), and so made liable to all miseries in this life, to death itself, and to the pains of hell for ever (Lamentations 3:39; Romans 6:23; Matthew 25:41, 46).
-Did God leave all mankind to perish in the estate of sin and misery?
God having out of His mere good pleasure, from all eternity, elected some to everlasting life (Ephesians 1:4-5), did enter into a covenant of grace, to deliver them out of the estate of sin and misery, and to bring them into an estate of salvation by a Redeemer (Romans 3:20-22; Galatians 3:21-22).

CHRIST CONNECTION
This is the way the Sunday school lesson points to Jesus.

It seems like there are a lot of bad things happening in the world and that no one is doing anything about it. Things got really bad in S***m and Gomorrah. A lot of people were not following God. Maybe Lot and his family wondered if God would allow evil to go unpunished. When we remember that God must punish sin, this can give us hope. One day, all of the bad things that are happening around us will be over, and God will punish evil people who are hurting others.

Sometimes it may seem like the things that we do aren't that bad. How many lies have you told? Even telling one lie makes you a liar. How many times have you stolen something? Even stealing one small thing makes you a thief. How many times have you killed someone? I know. You say that you have never done that! However, Jesus says that even when you hate someone in your heart or call someone a fool that you are killing that person. How many times have you coveted what others have and you don't? How many times have you taken God's name in vain? Even one time makes you a blasphemer. How many times have you dishonored your parents by not doing what they have asked you to do or doing it unwillingly? We have all sinned. We have all broken God's commands. We all deserve to be punished. One day, we will receive that punishment. Our punishment will be to be separated from God forever in a place called Hell where we will suffer eternally for the things that we have done against God. That is the bad news.

However, God is gracious, as well as just. He does not want to see His people suffer in Hell. He sent His Son Jesus to live the perfect life that we cannot live. Jesus died on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins and to give us His righteousness. God's gift of grace can be ours when we repent of our sin, turning away from them and turning in faith to Jesus Christ, believing that the death He died was done on our behalf.

KEY PASSAGE
This is the Bible verse that relates to what your children studied during Sunday school this week and is good for memorization.

Genesis 12:2

I will make you into a great nation,
I will bless you,
I will make your name great,
and you will be a blessing.

MOVE IT OR LOSE IT

Many children learn best by moving. Brainstorm motions with your children to match their memory verse. When children learn movements they are less likely to “lose it” from their memory.
