Catechism, part 6.

These four words help us understand the nature of the Church.

One — not because every Christian looks or worships identically, but because of a shared confession: one Lord, one faith, one baptism (Ephesians 4:4–6).

Holy — not because its members are already perfect (a plain look at church history proves otherwise), but because God has set it apart for His purposes and keeps sanctifying it.

Catholic — meaning universal, not a denomination. It belongs to no single nation or century.

Apostolic — it holds to the same faith the apostles received from Christ, handed down rather than reinvented.

“The communion of saints" includes every believer who has ever died in Christ, "so great a cloud of witnesses" surrounding you even now (Hebrews 12:1). You belong to something much bigger than your own week.

Catechism, Part 5

Of the three Persons the Creed names, the Spirit is the one we struggle to fully understand. Scripture describes the Holy Spirit as wind, fire, breath, water. He's always at work.

Yet, the Holy Spirit is not an impersonal force. He's fully God. He can be grieved (Ephesians 4:30), He intercedes for you (Romans 8:26), He convicts, comforts, and teaches. Called "the giver of life," He's the same Spirit who hovered over creation, overshadowed Mary, and raised Jesus from the dead — and He's the one who makes you spiritually alive.

Catechism, part 4.

"Jesus Christ" isn't a first and last name — it's a name and a claim. Jesus means "the Lord saves." Christ means "the Anointed One," God's promised King.

Christian teaching makes one of the boldest claims in all of history: Jesus is, at the very same time, fully God and fully human — not half of each, one Person with two complete natures, united without confusion. He had to be human to stand in our place; He had to be God for that sacrifice to be enough for everyone who has ever lived.

So He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried — a real death, in real history, bearing what our sin deserved (2 Corinthians 5:21). And the third day He rose again — bodily, not metaphorically, defeating the death He'd entered. "If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile" (1 Corinthians 15:17). He was. It isn't.

Catechism, part 3.

The Creed opens by drawing our attention to God, a Father who loves us. Jesus taught us to God call "Abba," Father. Whatever your experience of an earthly father has been, God is the Father every human father was meant to reflect. "I have called you by name, you are mine... you are precious in my eyes, and I love you" (Isaiah 43:1,4). Yet, God is not only a God who loves us– he is the all-powerful creator of the universe. He is the Almighty.

Catechism, part 2.

The Apostles' Creed is perhaps the oldest Christian statement of faith. It was developed to prepare a Christian for baptism and was a question/answer series. Do you believe in God the Father Almighty? Do you believe in Christ Jesus, His only Son? Do you believe in the Holy Spirit? "I believe" was always the answer.

An ancient teacher named Vincent of Lérins described the Apostles Creed as what has been believed "everywhere, always, and by all" — the settled conviction of the whole Christian family, across every century and continent.

And it's more than a list of facts to memorize. To say "I believe" is to say where your ultimate trust is placed. Over the next few posts, we'll walk through what that trust actually rests on.

Coming soon! We will be starting a several-week catechism class prior to our Sunday worship services at 10 AM. To prepare us, here is the start of a 10 part series previewing Catechism.

The word catechesis comes from a Greek word, katēchein — "to sound down into the ears," the way an echo repeats until it settles into the heart. It isn't a single lesson delivered once. It's truth spoken again and again, patiently, until it becomes how a person actually thinks, prays, and lives.

Catechism teaches us the basics of the faith so we are prepared to share and defend our faith.

"Contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints." — Jude 1:3

Anglican worship is shaped by the liturgical calendar, which orders the life of the Church around the story of Christ. Through seasons and holy days such as Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Easter, and Pentecost, Anglicans are invited each year to walk through the life, death, resurrection, and reign of Jesus. This rhythm forms disciples over time, grounding worshipers in the great story of redemption and helping shape daily life around the life of Christ.
