Why Do We Take the Utsava Murthi Out for Procession?
An Utsavar / Utsava Murthi is the sacred, portable form of the deity, lovingly crafted to leave the sanctum and come among the devotees during festivals and special occasions. While the Moolavar remains within the temple Sanctum Sanctorum, the Utsavar journeys outward, allowing everyone to experience the divine presence, grace, and blessings more closely.
Through daily poojas, prayers, mantras, and devotion, divine energy is invoked into the Utsavar. Over time, the Murthi becomes a sacred storehouse of spiritual energy, radiating positive vibrations in all four directions around the temple called the Naalu Thisaigal When the Utsava Murthi Amman comes out in procession, that divine energy spreads outward, outweighing negativity and bringing protection, peace, and blessings to the temple and wherever she goes.
The Utsava Murthi also allows those who may not be able to enter the temple sanctum the opportunity to feel, see, and connect with the loving energy of Amman. In this way, the Goddess Mariamman comes to her devotees, embracing everyone equally with her grace.
During the procession, devotees may joyfully sing, dance, swing, and gently rock the Utsava Murthi as an offering of love and devotion. These movements are not merely celebration they symbolize divine bliss, the cosmic dance of creation, and the living energy of the deity moving among the devotees.
The sacred Alankaram of flowers, jewels, and rich garments reflects the beauty, glory, and divine attributes of the Goddess. Every step of the procession becomes an act of bhakti, uniting devotees in devotion, joy, and spiritual connection.
As Amman in the form of the Utsava Murthi comes out in procession, it reminds us that the Divine is never distant she walks with us, blesses us, protects us, and embraces all devotees with compassion and love.
May the blessings of Maha Mayi be with you always
