Sermon Title: “God as Good in Itself”

Speaker: Fidel Arnecillo

One of the greatest discoveries in the saga of divine-human relationships in the Bible is the realization that God, or a relationship with or knowledge of God, is an intrinsic good or good in itself, requiring no other good thing to make it good. It is an end in itself, not merely a means to another end. Christian maturity should lead us to this spiritual truth.

Note: Before you watch the video, please read my comment below and take into account a major correction that I made.

Where is God when nothing seems to go our way? That's the wrong question to ask. How does one even know that things should go our way? It's false to believe that with God, things will go our way. If that has fooled you, it's time to let it go. The sooner we accept that things won't necessarily go our way, the better it will be for us. We should accept our lot in life, whatever it may be, as we faithfully serve God. If God truly exists, a relationship with that God should be a good in itself, not a mere means to some other end.

Online Bible Study on 1 Corinthians (Meeting 1: First Half of Introduction)

Participants did a good job in the discussions, but I, the one who facilitated the discussions, did a poor job. I was a little lost on this one, since I was trying to figure out how to approach the book with our group. I realized that, after watching the video, I also mischaracterized a major point of the author of the text. I don't think he wants us to ignore authorial intent. Rather, I think that he just wants to diminish the role of authorial intent in textual interpretation by treating it not as primarily or solely important. I did a little better on the 2nd meeting. I hope to be better in the upcoming meetings. Enjoy!
