Sermon Title: “Jesus Loves Little Children”

Speaker: Fidel Arnecillo

We have infant baptism on this day. So, let’s talk about children. We often instruct children to not bother important guests. But Jesus in the synoptic gospels was portrayed as welcoming children. He cared about them. He enjoyed their company. He admired some childlike qualities, such as their innocence. He would not like governments that use them as political pawns or victimize them as casualties of wars. He wanted them to be treated as special.

Sermon: A True Religion

Speaker: Fidel Arnecillo

We are accustomed to identifying a true religion by what it believes, not by what good it does to the least among us, and by its conformity to the culture, not by its countercultural nature. James, supposedly a brother of Jesus, had it the other way around. Jesus would seem to agree with James. The religiosity of popular American Christianity today fails to reflect what Jesus and James had in mind.

For many of us, we wonder what we exactly need to do with our short lives on earth. The Bible generally presents a vision of what we need to be: God’s partners. It has to do with partnering with God in redeeming everything that is good about all creation from anything that threatens it.

Sermon Title: Faithfulness Matters

Speaker: Fidel Arnecillo

Result-oriented thinking, probably through consumerism, has infiltrated the church. The McDonaldization of the church makes it value quantity over quality. That is why many churches today look more like for-profit businesses with pastors who look more like business entrepreneurs and motivational speakers than spiritual leaders and theological guides. As we celebrate our church’s anniversary, we need to remind ourselves that, as Pastor Paul Prather pointed out, “The measure of our walk with God isn’t in results, but in faithfulness.”
