"Who is among you that feareth the LORD, that obeyeth the voice of his servant, that walketh in darkness, and hath no light? let him trust in the name of the Lord, and stay upon his God." (Isaiah 50:10)

“But again you say, suppose that a man's sins be exceeding great, gross, and heinous; for I do confess that possibly a godly man may sin some sin against his light, and against his conscience sometimes; but as for me, my sin is exceeding great, gross and heinous, and have I not just cause and reason now to be discouraged?

No, not yet, for though your sin be great, is not God's mercy great, exceeding great? Is not the satisfaction made by Christ great? Are the merits of Christ's blood small? Is not God, the great God of heaven and earth, able to do great things? You grant that God is almighty in providing for you and is he not almighty also in pardoning? Will you rob God of his almightiness in pardoning? You say your sin is great, but is it infinite? Is not God alone infinite? Is your sin as big as God, as big as Christ? Is Jesus Christ only a Mediator for small sins?”

William Bridge, A Lifting Up for the Downcast (1649; Edinburgh: Banner of Truth, 2021), pp. 90-91.

"There are two sorts of persons who will find it harder to repent than others.

1. Such as have sat a great while under the droppings of God's Ordinances, but grow no better. The earth which drinketh in the Rain, yet beareth thorns and briars, is nigh unto cursing (Heb. 6:8). The metal which hath lain long in the fire, but is not melted and refined, there is little hope of it. When God hath sent his Ministers one after another, exhorting and persuading men to leave their sins, but they settle upon the lees of formality, and can sit and sleep under a Sermon; it will be hard for these ever to be brought to Repentance; they may fear lest Christ should say to them as once to the Fig-tree, Never fruit grow on thee more.

2. They will find it harder to repent, who have sinned frequently against the convictions of the Word, the checks of conscience, and the motions of the Spirit. Conscience hath stood as the Angel, with a flaming sword in its hand; it hath said, Do not this great evil; but sinners regard not the voice of conscience, but march on resolvedly under the Devils colours: these will not find it easy to repent (Job 24.13). They are of those that rebel against the Light. It is one thing to sin for want of light, and another thing to sin against light. Here the unpardonable sin takes its rise; first men sin against the light of conscience, and so proceed gradually to the despighting the Spirit of grace."

Thomas Watson, The Doctrine of Repentance, Useful for These Times (London: Printed by R.W. for Thomas Parkhurst, 1668), pp. 77-8.

"Too high an estimation of any peculiar way of worship is apt to entice the minds of some into a hurtful confidence in these things. Having an apprehension that they alone have attained unto the right way of gospel worship and the administration of its ordinances, and that, perhaps, on such accounts as wherein they are eminently deceived, they begin first greatly to value themselves, and then to despise all others, and, if they can, to persecute them. This insensibly works them into a trust in that which they esteem so excellent, and that unto an open neglect of things of a greater weight and moment. Thus is it not unusual to see persons who are under the power of some singular opinion and practice in religion to make one thing almost their whole business, the measure of other things and persons, the rule of communion and of all sincere love; — to value and esteem themselves and others according unto their embracing or not embracing of that opinion. There is here something of that which God complains of in the prophet, Isa. lxv. 5. And it were to be wished that such principles and practices were not visibly accompanied with a decay of love, humility, meekness, self-diffidence, condescension, and zeal in other things, seeing where it is so, let men’s outward profession be what it will, the plague of apostasy is begun. Wherefore, although we ought greatly to prize and to endeavour after the true order of the church of Christ, the purity of worship, and regular administration of ordinances, yet let us take heed that we prize not ourselves too much on what we have attained; for if we do so, we shall be very apt to countenance ourselves in other neglects thereby, which will certainly bring us into a spiritual sickness and declension. And, one way or other, there is an undue confidence placed in these outward privileges"

John Owen, "Nature and Causes of Apostasy from the Gospel" in The Works of John Owen (1676; Edinburgh: Banner of Truth Trust, 1994), 7:252-3.
