At a recent Gateway Seminary Conference, Dr. Vanhoozer shared some valuable insight on "cultural literacy" in and for the church. Having a high view of scripture is a must, but we must also know the culture of those we are reaching with the gospel and the Word. He shared this website on connecting parents, teens and Jesus in a disconnected world. It is a valuable resource for your ministry in the NextGen context! Staying connected with the language of our youth is difficult because it changes so often.
If you click the resources tab you can sign up for a "culture translator" that will send you three phrases each week to your email that explain what your teen is actually saying, both verbally and through social media and texting.

This session is for those who work with youth from 6th grade to 12th grade. Topics to be covered include: learning styles, teaching methods, how to make Bible teaching exciting and relevant, lesson preparation, how to reach and minister to youth and their families, youth developmental issues (social, emotional, physical, mental and spiritual) and how to develop new youth workers.

If a student ministry runs like a church within a church, when teens graduate out of that student ministry, they feel like they’re joining a different church even though it meets at the same address. It’s a strange transition for them because they don’t know the leadership, the vision, or have any established relationships outside the youth group. That’s why many leave. - Shane Pruitt

Rather than complain about the church’s faults and criticize those who leave, we need to disciple students to stay and love the church.
