In the book of John, Jesus is asked by an expert in the law, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
Jesus tells us the parable of the Good Samaritan. We all know it… Don’t we…
‘A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead…’ (Luke 10:30)
A priest and a Levite, both pious leaders of the Jewish community, happened to be going down the same road, and when they saw the man, they passed by on the other side of the road. A Samaritan came where the man was; and he took pity on him…
We are all familiar with this scripture from Luke. It is one of those that I remember from my youth when my mother was helping me in my confirmation classes telling me that this was her idea of what it meant to be a follower of Christ.
We all too often think that it is easy to follow Christ, however the more we learn and the more we try to follow the path Jesus, and his Father have laid out for us, He realized that often is easier to say than it is to do. We begin to understand the roadblocks that today's society has laid before us. That the message that the prevailing media of today is giving us may or may not be what Jesus or his father intended.
In the reading from Luke chapter 10 verses 30 through 35 Jesus gives us an example of what it means to follow him and how we should act as Christians. The Priest and the Levite both pious and religious Jewish personages see the Jewish man who has been robbed on the side of the road choose to take the quick and easy path the path of least resistance and the path that would do the least harm to them.
We live in a time and a place where being a Christian is the norm rather than the exception. We live in a time and a place where we would think that it would be easy for us to do what Jesus asks. Yet we live in a time and place where we learn to put ourselves, our wants and our desires ahead of everything and everyone else.
When asked what the greatest commandment was Jesus answered “The most important one, is this: Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.” -Mark 12:29-31
In the end the question is, do we only follow our wants and desires? Do we place ourselves above everyone and everything else? Do we think of prayer as a way to get what we want, or do we ask the LORD what he wants for us?
The next time you pray the Lord’s Prayer, remember you are asking for his will to be done.
