The First Kachin Baptist Church of America is a 501 (c) (3), a non-profit religious organization, and is an active member of the American Baptist Churches of Nebraska (ABC/NE) and the American Baptist Churches in the U.S.A (ABCUSA) since 2002. We are active members of the American Baptist Churches of Nebraska (ABC/NE) and the American Baptist Churches in the U.S.A (ABCUSA). Who We Are
We are Kachi
n Americans residing in Omaha, Nebraska. Originally from Burma (also known as Myanmar), the Kachin people have a rich cultural heritage, including myths, language, literature, dances, costumes, poems, and traditional music. Our mission is to preserve and promote these invaluable traditions through the activities and expressions of our church. A majority of the Kachin people are Baptists, a testament to the efforts and sacrifices of American Baptist missionaries who introduced the Baptist faith to the Kachin community. FKBCA is a unique blend of Kachin and American cultures, creating a hybrid community of faith. Our History
The origins of FKBCA date back to the 1990s when Kachin individuals arrived in Omaha as students, immigrants, political asylums, and refugees. To worship in their native language and maintain fellowship, the Kachin Christian Fellowship was established on December 23, 2001. As more Kachin people settled in Omaha, the First Kachin Baptist Church of America was officially founded on June 9, 2002, to address the spiritual needs of the Kachin believers. It holds the distinction of being the first officially registered Kachin Baptist Church in North America. Dr. Hkungam Lahpai served as our senior pastor from 2002 until his retirement in 2020. Since then, Rev. Dr. Zau Sam Lahtaw has taken on the role of senior pastor. Over the past 21 years, our congregation has grown to include approximately 200 members, including children. Our leadership team consists of one full-time pastor, two part-time pastors, six church officers, eight deacons, and ten Sunday school teachers. The church’s programs and activities are managed by twelve different ministries, departments, and committees. Worship Services and Location
We offer three worship services in Kachin, Burmese, and English. Our congregation gathers regularly at the Ola Hanson Memorial Sanctuary, located at 9525 Maple St, Omaha, NE 68134. We are committed to nurturing our faith community and preserving the beautiful traditions of the Kachin people while embracing our American Baptist heritage.
