The medical mission team that would normally go to SS in March was cancelled due to insecurity in the Kajo Keji area. Instead, we took a team of three to perform an assessment of the situation. This abbreviated team included Dr. Joseph Dumba, Pastor John Bueno and Documentarian Jeff Spring.
It was the most incredible mission trip that I have done to date. We were not sure what we were going to encounter. We are looking at a holistic assessment of what we can do through HKF for the people of SS.
Over the last 6 months, there has been an influx of over 150,000 refugees from the Kajo Keji area who are now based in Moyo district in northern Uganda. This is the population that normally the HKF would serve.
There is a lot to say about this trip, but most importantly, I would like to communicate some of the needs these people shared with me. First of all, PRAYER. Despite the hardships they are living on a daily basis, they are thankful to God for the life they have, and you can see in their faces the hope that can only come from above. Even in their desperation, their wishlist includes: trauma counseling, for there are many suicides. Spiritual support, because there are no churches anywhere at this time. Medical assistance and medications. 50% of the population is made up of young adults (under 20) and they are calling for education so that their youth is not lost.
