Tomorrow, Sunday, April 30, we will be welcoming a visiting pastor from the Czech Republic to Discovery Presbyterian Church, 48th and Monroe in Omaha. The Rev. Mirek Pfann, pastor of the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren in Libis, which is community located near Prague, is on a three-month study trip to the United States. During his study, Rev. Pfann wants to follow in the footsteps of Czech Protestant emigrants to America, so he is visiting places and congregations that Czech Protestants founded in America.
Discovery Presbyterian Church is a “descendant” of Bethlehem Presbyterian Church, the most significant Czech Protestant church that was once located in the Brown Park neighborhood of South Omaha. Bethlehem Church was located just south of 21st and “Q” Streets. When the Bethlehem congregation dwindled and the church closed in the 1970s, it merged with Park Forest Presbyterian, then when Park Forest closed in the 1980s, the congregation merged with Wheeler Memorial Presbyterian. And finally, when Wheeler Church closed in 2012, the congregation merged with Mosher-Pilgrim to become Discovery Church. At least one family descended from the historical Bethlehem congregation, the Hlavaceks, are still very active members of Discovery Church!
During the fellowship time after our service, Rev. Pfann, who is also associated with the Czech evangelical congregations in Ukraine, would like to meet and visit with descendants of those who once left their homes in the “old country” to find new homes in America. If you are a descendant of one of those Protestant Czech families, Rev. Pfann would like to meet you. And during our fellowship time, everyone will be able to enjoy several traditional Czech treats — kolache, lamb cake, vánocká (houska), poppy seed coffee cake, bohemian sourdough rye bread with caraway seeds (the original Ferd’s bakery recipe), plus summer sausage and cheese!
There will also be a display of historical Czech items and photos to enjoy, as well!
All are welcome — visitors as well as members — as we invite Rev. Pfann to share more about his work in the Czech Republic and the project he is working on during his visit to the United States!
