Father Damian’s homily reflects on Jesus’ challenging call to Peter, and to all of us, to move beyond our natural instinct for self-preservation and embrace a life of self-giving love. He explains that while Peter wanted to protect Jesus from suffering, Jesus reminds him that God’s plan often goes against our human desire for comfort, control, and security. Father Damian acknowledges that loving others, especially when they are difficult or unappreciative, can be hard, but Jesus never promised that discipleship would be easy. Drawing from St. Paul, he encourages us to see those difficult acts of love, generosity, time, and service not simply as gifts to other people, but as sacrifices and offerings to God. Ultimately, by offering ourselves in this way, we are transformed, learning to overcome selfishness and live more fully as followers of Christ, with the promise that God will ultimately reward that self-giving love.

Father Damian’s homily reflects on Jesus calling Peter and all of us, the “rock” upon which the Church is built, emphasizing that this responsibility belongs not only to Peter or the popes, but to every person of faith. He acknowledges that being someone’s “rock” can feel like a tremendous responsibility, yet Jesus entrusts us with the authority to help others through forgiveness, mercy, and invitation. Father Damian explains that we have the “keys to the kingdom” because our actions and relationships can open the door for people who have become separated from God to encounter Jesus again. He challenges us not to be afraid of the evil and difficulties in the world, reminding us that Jesus says the gates of hell will not prevail. Ultimately, Jesus trusts each of us to be a small but important “rock,” working with him to build God’s kingdom and bring others into his love.
