Today we celebrate ๐๐ญ. ๐๐จ๐ง๐ข๐๐, and tomorrow we celebrate her son, ๐๐ญ. ๐๐ฎ๐ ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐. The placement of their feast days gives us a beautiful reminder of the power of a parentโs persistent prayer.
Long before Augustine became one of the great Saints and Doctors of the Church, he was a son who had wandered far from the faith. For years, Monica prayed, wept and hoped for his conversion.
Along the way, she learned something every parent can take to heart: ๐ฌ๐จ๐ฆ๐๐ญ๐ข๐ฆ๐๐ฌ ๐ฐ๐ ๐ง๐๐๐ ๐ญ๐จ ๐ญ๐๐ฅ๐ค ๐ฅ๐๐ฌ๐ฌ ๐ญ๐จ ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐๐ก๐ข๐ฅ๐๐ซ๐๐ง ๐๐๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ ๐๐จ๐ ๐๐ง๐ ๐ญ๐๐ฅ๐ค ๐ฆ๐จ๐ซ๐ ๐ญ๐จ ๐๐จ๐ ๐๐๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐๐ก๐ข๐ฅ๐๐ซ๐๐ง.
Monica could not force Augustine to believe. She could not choose his path for him. But she could place him, again and again, into the hands of God. And she never stopped praying.
Parents, grandparents and godparents, if there is a child you love who has wandered from the faith, do not lose hope. Your prayers matter. Your sacrifices matter. Your quiet witness matters. Keep bringing that child to Jesus and trust Him with the rest.
