Nebraska Synod, ELCA

Nebraska Synod, ELCA God's Work, Our Hands The Nebraska Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America is a church...
.. that belongs to Christ.

There is a place for you here.
.. whose unity is in Jesus Christ, who gathers us around word and water, wine and bread.
.. that believes Jesus is God's "Yes" to us. Our lives can be a "Yes" to others.
.. that believes God is calling us into the world – together.
.. that rolls up our sleeves and gets to work.
.. that is a catalyst, convener and bridge builder.
.. that is energized by lively engagement in our faith and life.
.. that is deeply rooted – and always being made new.

On May 24, the Nebraska Synod was grateful to be represented by Pastor Katie Gallagher, CaSTLE Project Director, as she visited the delightful people of St. John’s in Norfolk.

On this Pentecost Sunday, the congregation and Katie explored the work of the Holy Spirit with a simple but powerful image: balloons.

As worshipers filled their balloons with air, they were invited to remember the Spirit, the very breath of God, poured into us.

Together they recalled that the Holy Spirit is a gift given in baptism, revisited their baptismal promises, and reflected on the many ways the Spirit helps us live those promises out in daily life.

When the balloons were released and flew in every direction, the sanctuary filled with laughter.

It became a joyful reminder that, like those balloons, the Holy Spirit sometimes moves in ways we cannot predict and brings deep joy as she does.

St. John’s is eagerly awaiting the arrival of their newly called pastor, who will begin ministry with them on June 10.

Their many vibrant ministries already show how deeply they care for their community and the world, and we give thanks for the ways the Holy Spirit is at work among them.

Thirsty land. Flooded fields. Tornado skies. Blizzard roads.

In his June Reflections, Bishop Scott Alan Johnson names what many of us feel in seasons when our souls are dry and our prayer sounds like “O Lord, make haste to answer me; my spirit fails me.”

He also reminds us that we are a resurrection people and that whatever the forecast, we do not walk alone.

Day 2 at Synod Assembly was full and Spirit filled, as we gathered for business sessions, workshops, the Willing Witness Dinner, and so much more.

The Spirit was alive in, around, and through the people of the Nebraska Synod as we shared stories, listened deeply, and formed connections that will continue to shape our life and ministry together.

Day 1 of 2026 Synod Assembly felt like a family reunion, with more than 500 people gathered in worship, learning, and song.

We began with pre-assembly workshops; joined in worship and music led by Nebraska Synod Bishop Scott Johnson, Presiding ELCA Bishop Yehiel Curry and musician, Paul Vasile; then wrapped up with an interesting and thoughtful Q/A session with Bishop Curry.

Throughout the day we caught glimpses of our theme, “Broken Open,” as God met us in our stories, our questions, and our shared life together where brokenness is not the end, but the beginning of grace.

We are excited to welcome Paul Vasile as a featured leader at our 2026 Nebraska Synod Assembly.

A church musician, consultant, composer, and teacher, Paul finds his greatest joy in collaborative, community-centered ministry.

His leadership models expansive, imaginative, and hospitable music making that builds trust, invites creativity and vulnerability, and helps faith communities be strengthened and energized through the ways they worship and sing together.
