"When we listen closely for God’s guidance, we can expect to discern the thoughts that divine Mind is conveying to everyone to bring the greatest blessings possible, since God is pure Love. His will is surely for good, since He is totally good. As we’re humble and willing to trust the unerring guidance of Mind, we’ll be receptive to the right motives, thoughts, and actions that result from God’s harmonious government of His creation. To see the right course of action or to know if we need to make a course correction, we can trust Mind to lead us in the right way and give us the willingness to make any needed adjustment."

Wondering how to follow the biblical directive to love your neighbor? This author’s experience not only demonstrates the “how,” but it also offers a higher standard for how we relate to others—especially when we feel wronged.

"After receiving this communication from the practitioner, I was at peace. I felt God’s loving and calm embrace. I knew right then that all was and would be well. A heavy weight had been lifted off my mental shoulders, and I no longer felt alone. All stress simply melted away. I also knew that this healing prayer would benefit not just me but many people all over the world. I prayed to know that everyone could find a secure sense of home wherever they were."

“I felt God’s presence and remember thinking to myself, ‘Truly, God is in this room, and whether everyone realizes it or not, this ceremony is a celebration, a sense of homecoming, for all of us.’”

"[The] ability of spiritual sense to overrule what the material senses convey helps me to obey the Ninth Commandment: “Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour” (Exodus 20:16). To me, this is saying that God’s law is that we bear witness only to what God knows—to spiritual reality—and this witnessing of what is true heals."

Faced with an “impossible” teaching assignment, this author leaned on the Ninth Commandment to help her, knowing, as she puts it, that “God’s law is that we bear witness only to what God knows—to spiritual reality—and this witnessing of what is true heals.”

If we are caught up in the news these days and feeling despondent about what lies ahead for our country, or the world, or even for ourselves, we might consider what Moses said to a certain young man: “Would God that all the Lord’s people were prophets, and that the Lord would put his spirit upon them!” (Numbers 11:29).

It’s a good way to approach the news—as a prophet. The Discoverer of Christian Science and founder of The Christian Science Monitor, Mary Baker Eddy, defined prophet as “a spiritual seer; disappearance of material sense before the conscious facts of spiritual Truth” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 593). As spiritual seers, we can look beyond every untoward event or disappointing newsmaker to see the truth of what God is doing right now, right here. That’s the real news of what is happening. And it’s always good.

"How comforting to know that we’re following God’s direction, not trying to solve the problem through limited human reasoning and knowledge. The all-knowing, all-seeing, all-loving divine Mind will provide the answers. When we acknowledge the omnipresence of God and listen for His voice, we can expect to hear an answer every time, which brings healing results."

Christian Scientists don’t treat others metaphysically without their consent, but we can still pray generally to see the truth about God and all of His creation.

"To love God supremely and our neighbor as ourselves is the whole of religion, as Christ Jesus himself indicated (see Matt. 22:37–40). I'm convinced that all politics should be expressed and dealt with in this context of love. Sometimes this love needs to be shown outwardly as a very firm and strong position or act. Good politics are often bold politics, taking a fearless stand for what is right. I have read tons of both liberal and conservative political material for years. There are hard, angry, and unloving positions on both sides that do not contribute to a righteous government, but hinder its righteousness.

The brand of love we need is that which expels false ambition, dishonesty, showmanship, posturing, sleekness, and other evils of human thought and expression, on the basis of their having no place in God's infinite kingdom. If we suffer unpopularity in the process, so what? Nothing but adherence to truth, as individuals and as institutions, brings true progress and success."

"Over the centuries, political philosophers developed the theory that democracy is a social pact in which people, for their own good, submit themselves to collective decision-making. But even the strongest of democracies needs constant renewal. How can this be accomplished? What if love broadened our interest beyond ourselves to include all mankind? What if we all had an interest in loving for the great fulfillment and joy that come from knowing who we truly are as children of God, Love? That would be the basis for a new, unifying social contract."

Aggressive language, virulent attacks, and the tendency to think of those whose policies we oppose as enemies are not only anti-democratic actions and notions but also profoundly alien to our true selves.

"Christ Jesus understood the preeminence of God’s government over human government. When his followers learned that he was the promised Messiah, they assumed he would deliver them from the rule of the Roman Empire. In their view, the Romans were public enemy number one. The oppression and tyranny they experienced under Roman law were severe. But Jesus saw differently. He did not see the Romans or any human ruler or government official as the leading cause of public suffering."

Bruce makes the point that spiritually based prayer and action can be the most effective power in world affairs. He says, “Very few of us have the opportunity to serve in major leadership posts in our government, but we can all pray and through our prayers we can affect government. The love that w...
