"[A] more Christly consciousness doesn’t exclude measured engagement with things we enjoy, such as sports, cultural activities, friendships, etc. But it does increasingly lift us to behold our true, spiritual identity, in which neither over-stimulation nor boredom exists to stop us from actively and gladly reflecting Love, God."

If reading the Bible and Science and Health starts to feel uninspired or like a chore, we can rebel by knowing that this is simply “the ever-gray mentality that is matter-based thinking that seems to hide the multihued ideas of Mind, God.”

"...I realized that regularly reading online posts left me frustrated rather than better informed. This reminded me of a Bible verse I love, which reads, in part, “Whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; . . . think on these things” (Philippians 4:8). It was true that when I focused on lovely and good things, I felt happier and better, because they led me to solutions rather than keeping me in a loop of anger and helplessness. It was also true that a lot of what I read on social media was pretty unlovely. But it was still tough for me to stop the scrolling."

If you’re struggling to get off your phone, this author has some spiritual insights—gained from her own prayers about how to stop scrolling—that can help.

"When we listen closely for God’s guidance, we can expect to discern the thoughts that divine Mind is conveying to everyone to bring the greatest blessings possible, since God is pure Love. His will is surely for good, since He is totally good. As we’re humble and willing to trust the unerring guidance of Mind, we’ll be receptive to the right motives, thoughts, and actions that result from God’s harmonious government of His creation. To see the right course of action or to know if we need to make a course correction, we can trust Mind to lead us in the right way and give us the willingness to make any needed adjustment."

Wondering how to follow the biblical directive to love your neighbor? This author’s experience not only demonstrates the “how,” but it also offers a higher standard for how we relate to others—especially when we feel wronged.

"After receiving this communication from the practitioner, I was at peace. I felt God’s loving and calm embrace. I knew right then that all was and would be well. A heavy weight had been lifted off my mental shoulders, and I no longer felt alone. All stress simply melted away. I also knew that this healing prayer would benefit not just me but many people all over the world. I prayed to know that everyone could find a secure sense of home wherever they were."

“I felt God’s presence and remember thinking to myself, ‘Truly, God is in this room, and whether everyone realizes it or not, this ceremony is a celebration, a sense of homecoming, for all of us.’”

"[The] ability of spiritual sense to overrule what the material senses convey helps me to obey the Ninth Commandment: “Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour” (Exodus 20:16). To me, this is saying that God’s law is that we bear witness only to what God knows—to spiritual reality—and this witnessing of what is true heals."

Faced with an “impossible” teaching assignment, this author leaned on the Ninth Commandment to help her, knowing, as she puts it, that “God’s law is that we bear witness only to what God knows—to spiritual reality—and this witnessing of what is true heals.”

If we are caught up in the news these days and feeling despondent about what lies ahead for our country, or the world, or even for ourselves, we might consider what Moses said to a certain young man: “Would God that all the Lord’s people were prophets, and that the Lord would put his spirit upon them!” (Numbers 11:29).

It’s a good way to approach the news—as a prophet. The Discoverer of Christian Science and founder of The Christian Science Monitor, Mary Baker Eddy, defined prophet as “a spiritual seer; disappearance of material sense before the conscious facts of spiritual Truth” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 593). As spiritual seers, we can look beyond every untoward event or disappointing newsmaker to see the truth of what God is doing right now, right here. That’s the real news of what is happening. And it’s always good.
