Olympia Friends Meeting (Quakers)

Olympia Friends Meeting (Quakers) Olympia Friends Meeting gathers for silent worship Sundays at 10 a.m. at the Meetinghouse & on Zoom

Olympia Friends Meeting is part of the liberal, unprogrammed branch of Quakerism. All who might find the Quaker Meeting for Worship helpful in their spiritual search are welcome. We come from a wide variety of religious backgrounds; most of us were not raised as Quakers. Although the roots of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) are in Christianity, some individual Friends do not call themse

lves Christians. Today’s Friends are very comfortable with the wide range of beliefs in any one Quaker meeting. The Meeting welcomes LGBTQ persons and non-traditional families. Children are an important part of our Meeting, and we offer childcare and youth programs for our young folks. If you have never been to a Quaker meeting before, do not expect to find women wearing bonnets or men dressed like the guy on the Quaker Oats box!

How do we show up with Love for Immigrant Communities?
Join us Wednesday, April 29, 7:00 – 8:30 PM at the Harbor House at Percival Landing Park, 217 Thurston Ave NW, Olympia, for a conversation with Amy Gottlieb, American Friend Friends Service Committee (AFSC)’s Just Migration Director for US Programs to learn about AFSC’s work to support immigrant communities and how we can be part of the efforts. Amy will share information about US immigration law and policy, and AFSC’s vision for a more humane system. Amy will be joined by Gabriela Flora who did immigrant rights organizing in Colorado for AFSC and is now an AFSC donor liaison.

We are limited to a total of 25 people, indoors.
Bring finger foods if you like, we’ll bring some too, and serve ware and n/a drinks.
We hope to see you there.

You can visit Thee Quaker’s podcast covering AFSC’s immigration work at

When a Russian asylum-seeking family was met with chains instead of sanctuary, the American Friends Service Committee stepped in to offer a lifeline against the faceless deportation machine.

In December 1938, three American Quakers set off on a secret mission to Berlin to meet with the N***s. It was a month after the terror of Kristallnacht, when Jewish homes, shops, and synagogues across Germany were destroyed, and Rufus Jones, D. Robert Yarnall, and George A. Walton hoped to secure permission to help Jews leave Germany and provide humanitarian aid.

Their mission was exposed by the press mid-voyage, prompting N**i propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels to mockingly call the Quakers the “Three Wise Men.” When the group arrived at Gestapo headquarters, they presented a statement reminding the N**i officers of Quaker relief efforts after World War I, when Friends had fed over a million German children a day.

When the officers withdrew to deliberate with Reinhard Heydrich, the architect of Kristallnacht, the three Quakers bowed their heads in silent worship.

The N**i officers returned, and every request was granted. That fragile opening allowed hundreds of Jews to emigrate and enabled wider relief that saved countless others.

This coming Query Sunday, we are invited to reflect and share, as led, on how we use the resources and strength we are given to meet the challenges of living a whole and honest life.

The supporting quote for this query comes from Elizabeth Fry (1799):

“I give myself this advice: Do not fear truth, let it be ever so contrary to inclination and feeling. Never give up the search
after it; and let me take courage, and try from the bottom of my heart to do that which I believe truth dictates."

All are welcome to join us, in person at the Meetinghouse, or on Zoom. Link to our calendar with Zoom info in comments 👇

Three days until Query Sunday! We'll reflect and share, as led, on the following from North Pacific Yearly Meeting's Faith and Practice book:

Do we recognize that we are capable of both violence and peace? How do we build bridges that lead us to face and resolve conflict? (p. 79)

The supporting quotes for the query comes from North Pacific Yearly Meeting's Faith and Practice book:

“Peace is the state in which we are in accord with the Divine, the earth, and ourselves. We know that true, lasting peace among us is attainable through unity in the life of the Spirit.” (p. 97)

and

"The peace testimony is not about hiding conflict, but about engaging it openly, creatively, and with love for others." (Margery Post Abbott, p. 96)

All are welcome to join us for any meeting for worship - in person at the Meetinghouse, or on Zoom. Link to our calendar with Zoom info in comments 👇

This coming Query Sunday, we are invited to reflect and share, as led, on how we can bring hope to the world:

"How then, are Friends to rise to the future? What truths can we proclaim that may bring Hope to those who will inherit an increasingly troubled world?"

The query and supporting quote for this Query Sunday come from the North Pacific Yearly Meeting's Faith and Practice Book:

“Do we regularly examine ourselves for evidence of privilege and prejudice?” - p. 108

Supporting quote:

Jesus said: “As you have done unto the least,… you have done unto me” We are called to work for the peaceable Kingdom of God on the whole earth, in right sharing with all peoples. However few our numbers, we are called to be the salt that flavors and preserves, to be a light in the darkness of greed and destruction.” - Sixth World Conference of Friends 2012, in NPYM F&P, page 108

All are welcome to join us for any meeting for worship, in person at the Meetinghouse, or on Zoom. Link to our calendar with Zoom info in comments 👇
