Memphis Theological Seminary to Close After Spring Term, General Assembly Approves
The Cumberland Presbyterian General Assembly voted Friday January 23, 2026, to close Memphis Theological Seminary following the Spring 2026 academic term, concluding decisive action during a called meeting marked by urgency as a winter storm approached Middle Tennessee.
Meeting at Brenthaven Cumberland Presbyterian Church (Nashville Presbytery), commissioners moved swiftly through business as forecasts for winter storm Fern raised concerns about travel conditions. A quorum was declared with 34 clergy commissioners, nineteen elder commissioners and four Young Adult Delegates present.
After receiving addenda to previously distributed reports, the Assembly entered a period of questions and discussion moderated by the Rev. Rusty Rustenhaven, focusing largely on the Seminary’s financial condition, enrollment challenges and the work of its governing bodies.
The Rev. Dr. Michael Qualls moved approval of the recommendation contained in the report of the Seminary’s Board of Trustees while stating his desire that the motion be defeated. The motion failed.
The Rev. Larry Blakeburn then moved adoption of the recommendations of a Special Committee appointed by the Assembly. Recommendations numbered one, three, four and five were approved unanimously. Recommendation number two was approved with a minor amendment requiring status reports to be submitted to the 195th General Assembly.
The actions confirm that Memphis Theological Seminary will cease operations after the Spring 2026 term, ending more than 60 years of service to the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and the Mid-South in theological education and ministerial preparation.
Following the conclusion of substantive business, the minutes of the meeting were read and approved. With deteriorating weather conditions anticipated, the Assembly proceeded directly to closing worship, formally adjourning the called meeting.
