Devotions - June 14, 2026 - Numbers 35

God cares, and God provides. It doesn't matter if you are the lowest of the low or one of those who thinks they are at the top of society; He prepares a place for you. Even those who take a life accidentally can cling to this hope; He provides places of refuge where they can be safe until the matter comes before the law. Since God is just, He demands a just response - even when our anger and emotions might lead us to do more than we ought.

There is a place for each and every one of us where we may experience the Lord's favor. When we arrive at that place, there are responsibilities we must uphold. We hold the reins of responsibility so that justice will be maintained and care will be given. Let's use the gifts we have received to minister and care for the place and the people where we are.

It is important that we remember that the Lord is with us. We forget too quickly that He has delivered in the past and that He can do it again. He remembers it all, the little things and the great. And we are accountable to enact the call and use the gifts He gives us. Let's step forward into the new, remembering the past, so that we can see God's presence and power today.

God listens to our requests and honors our heart. Even if it isn't what was originally stated. When our desires are not at odds with His will, and when we don't renege on our responsibilities to others, He may just grant our requests. We should never be afraid to ask the Lord for something. We might find that His answer is yes. Especially if our hearts are in the right place.

Trying to make things right is never easy. The people of Israel are ordered to take vengeance on Midian for their failure at Baal Peor. They must fight to make things right. There is always a price when we do wrong. It will be difficult to make amends. And even our best attempts will not always make things better. Rather, let's do our best to not stray in the first place.

Our word matters. We shall not break it. But if someone else has a stake in what we promise, they should have a say in it. While the text speaks about a woman's vow, doesn't the idea that our oaths impact others impact how we consider what we should do? It ought to. Let's not make rash decisions. Consider your actions and thoughts. But let's keep our word.

Sometimes, we need to step away from the ordinary and focus on the special. What we choose to remember shapes us. Because of that, when we focus on the Lord and remember what He has done, it draws us even closer to the One who gives us life. We need both ... the daily and the special; we build rhythms of remembrance that draw us close to Him. So let's focus on the Lord and remember His saving grace.
