Tomatoes! The tomato patch is coming in nicely. We planted these in a block of 15 plants, 18 inches apart and used bamboo to make a supporting structure. As the tomatoes have grown, we have been pruning to the main vine and thinning the foliage. The vines are about 7 feet tall now and vigorously growing! The first set is sizing up and should be ready soon!

Beans! We planted Climbing Kentucky Pole Beans in our vertical garden and they are taking off! As with all beans, pick early and often to promote more growth. In our vertical garden, we have planted Vining Red Stem Spinach, cucumber, tomatoes and around the structure is squash. These beans were harvested from the inside of the structure with clippers!

Melons! Our mixed melon patch is coming in! We planted in mounds every 6 feet. In each mound, we planted cantaloupe, watermelon, pumpkin, squash and sunflowers. We dug out a hole and put in a half a wheel barrel of compost to plant. Irrigation is done via a distribution hosing and water emitters at every mound. As mulch, we are using the leaves from our oak forest.

Tomatoes! We have a few different methods to support our tomato plants. What we have done is use our bamboo and tied string to the top and staked the string at the base of the established tomato plants then we twisted the string around the plant. As it grows, we will continue to train the plant up the string!

Collards! Our collard greens have been going since last year! This is a typical harvest we get about every 2-3 weeks! In zone 9 a/b, collard greens can become perineal if planted with supple lighting. We had a community member in need so this morning we were able to harvest fresh greens! God is good!

Carrots! We planted these by direct sowing. The carrot seeds are so small and there are many ways to sow into the ground. What we did is simply prepped the bed and got down and sprinkled the seeds so carefully that they did well. We have been thinning them out and carrots are great weather they are small or big! We had some store bought carrots for comparison. We are calling our carrots "uglies"; however, when we ask which is preferred, "uglies" it is!

Tomatoes! Repurposing an old shelf to grow cherry tomatoes. This could be setup anywhere with sunlight and regular watering. We planted 5 plants and going to see how well they all grow on this shelf.

Garden beans! Pick often to promote more flowering and more beans! Even though these are bush beans, they still need support. We use a string attached to two poles at each end of the row and let the beans use the string as support.

Collard greens! Here in zone 9a/b collard greens can be perineal plants. We harvest the bottom leaves which is great for taking just what we need to cook, so no waste and always fresh greens!
