Plugged In

Our back patio had string lights hanging overhead. They’d been there when we bought the house, but one evening, I flipped the switch and nothing happened. No light.

We talked about replacing them and waited for a sale on a new set. In the meantime, I adapted. After the sun went down, I sat outside in the dark. It wasn’t ideal, but it was manageable. Eventually, it became normal.

Then one evening, I happened to look up at the socket.

They weren’t plugged in.

I wonder how often we live our spiritual lives the same way. We grow accustomed to a lack of joy, peace, hope, or purpose. We assume something is wrong with us. We adapt to the darkness and learn to function without the light God intends for us to have.

God has never stopped providing. The issue is that somewhere along the way, we became disconnected from the Source.

Spiritual disciplines become sporadic. Prayer becomes stale. Worship becomes routine. We’re still hanging in place, but not connected to the One who gives life.

Jesus said, “I am the light of the world” (John 8:12). The good news is that reconnecting to Christ doesn’t require replacing everything. It begins with a simple realization and a willing return.

The light was there all along. The power was available. The connection simply needed to be restored.

Today, before assuming something is broken, take a moment to look up. You may discover that the light you’ve been missing is closer than you think.
