The Bible describes God’s globe-spanning mission to bless “all the nations of the earth” (Genesis 22:17-18), the same mission Jesus commissions his disciples to carry out (Matthew 28:18-20; Acts 1:8). However, that mission encounters resistance from the seemingly endless number of categories we use to define our relationships with others. There is a tendency to use categories like black/white, Republican/Democrat, foreigner/citizen, liberal/conservative in divisive rather than descriptive ways – ways that reveal and reinforce prejudices that undermine God and Jesus’ mission.

Jesus commissions us to advance his kingdom’s global mission by representing his identity and will. The gospels provide insight into this mission through their account of the Pharisees, the Jewish religious leaders whose behavior shows how NOT to be a disciple of Jesus. This lesson will examine the Pharisees’ prejudices against people who were not like them.

Our elders have repeatedly stated their dedication to remaining a church-planting church. However, we must first be a growing church to be a church-planting church. Deacons play a vital role in that growth. Working alongside elders and ministers, deacons take responsibility for ministries that meet the needs of our church family and support our development. A few weeks ago, the elders announced a search for additional deacons, and today we will recognize the appointment of four new deacons to our church leadership: Garry Ahlgren, Jeremy Heusal, Matt Price, and Colin Dalli-Smith.

Several of our deacons have been meeting regularly over the past couple of years to develop plans for implementing our elders’ vision through improved communication and collaboration. Part of their efforts involves choosing an annual theme to direct their activities. They selected the following theme for this year:

Equipped for the mission: every disciple, every place

Their theme motivates our current sermon series, which explores the question, “What does it look like to be equipped for the mission?” We are focusing our study on Paul’s letter to the Colossians because it records his instruction to his audience to “put on” certain attitudes and practices (Colossians 3:12-14), which, together, form the portrait of an equipped disciple. This lesson examines the paired expectation of tolerance and forgiveness that the Colossians were to practice (Colossians 3:12).

In Colossians 3:12–14, Paul calls believers to “put on” humility as a defining mark of those who belong to Christ and are equipped for His mission. Grounded in their identity as God’s chosen, holy, and beloved people, Christians are to intentionally clothe themselves with humility in everyday life, especially in moments of tension and offense. The story of David and Nabal reveals how quickly even a faithful servant of God can be driven by wounded pride, while the example of Abigail shows humility as active, courageous, and peace-making, stepping into conflict to absorb tension and redirect destruction. Ultimately, her response points forward to Jesus, who perfectly embodies humility by entering our brokenness and fully bearing the judgment we deserved on the cross. Since we are united with Christ, humility is not merely an ideal to admire but a life to embody. As we learn to “put on” humility, we become a community marked by peace, unity, and Christlike character, and are therefore equipped to participate faithfully in God’s mission in the world.

In 2019, Forbes Magazine reported that US organizations alone spent an estimated $166 billion on leadership training (the global amount exceeds $366 billion). Clearly, our nation and our world believe in the importance of leaders. Jesus shares our world’s assessment of leaders’ importance. Paul wrote that Jesus “gave gifts to men” in the form of leaders, “the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers” (Ephesians 4:7-11). Today, we begin a search for additional deacons to serve our church family. Because we recognize leaders’ impact, our elders have laid out a six-week plan to find and appoint additional deacons that begins with today’s lesson. So, let’s consider the office of the deacon to frame our efforts to find additional deacons to serve our church family.

Reports confirm what we already know – church attendance is higher on Easter than on any other day. In 2023, for example, about half of U.S. adults planned to attend church during Easter. People gather for worship on Easter to remember Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection. While that might sound like a gruesome memorial, a celebratory mood marks the day because Jesus did not remain in the tomb – he returned to life “on the third day” (Acts 10:34-41). The New Testament writers called Jesus’ resurrection “good news” (Acts 10:36) and explained its significance to their readers through the letters they wrote. We believe the Good News about Jesus, and we celebrate times when people think about Jesus. Therefore, we will use this Easter service to focus on the good news about Jesus’ resurrection, reminding ourselves of its meaning for our lives.

Join us tomorrow at 8:00 or 10:30 for worship. We hope to see you there!

After reminding his readers of the inheritance God guaranteed them in “the kingdom of his beloved son” (Colossians 1:12-13), Paul urged the Colossian Christians to focus themselves on that kingdom by “seek[ing] the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God” (Colossians 3:1). But, Paul wrote, seeking has a specific look; it involves “put[ting] to death” the attitudes and practices inconsistent with Jesus’ rule and kingdom and “put[ting] on” ones consistent with Jesus (Colossians 3:5-14). This lesson introduces an examination of the attitudes and practices Paul instructed the Colossians to “put on,” beginning with “compassionate hearts” (Colossians 3:12).
