The Putnam City Church of Christ first started meeting in the fall of 1939 when members of the congregations at the 10th & Francis Church of Christ and 12th & Drexel Church of Christ committed to the establishment of the Lord’s work in the Putnam City community and surrounding area. They started meeting at the Putnam City school building and held their first gospel meeting outdoors in an open-air
tent on the school grounds and was conducted by F. Later about 30 to 40 members began holding services at 5820 Northwest 41st Street. In 1943 the church purchased 199 feet of land west of their building site and over the next two years four expansion programs were undertaken. In 1960, the original property was sold and a new location acquired that would provide more room for expansion and parking. 2.5 acres were purchased at the corner of Northwest 42nd & Ann Arbor and the original property was sold to Jack Cherry and Gene Adams in August 1962 for a funeral home called Gene Adams Funeral Home. Today it is now known as Guardian West. The Church constructed a basement on the new property where they worshiped until 1963 when the building was completed and an open house was held December 1, 1963 where the church continues to reside to this day. Our goal today, and the future, is to continue worshiping God as He has commanded and to take the Gospel to others in this community and around the world as commanded in Mark 16:15. We welcome those who will commit with us in carrying out this great effort to all mankind. What kind of People
We are a diverse group of people, coming from various backgrounds and professions; as well as different states of knowledge and spiritual growth in our walk with Christ. We are not a perfect people but are forgiven and brought together by a recognition that we are sinners in need of the cleansing blood of Jesus Christ. A cleansing we believe is recieved from God when one dies, is buried, and raised with Jesus through water baptism in Jesus name (Mark 16:15,16; Acts 22:16). We are people on a journey striving together to serve God, our families, our community and the world. We worship together, stick together in good times and bad and with God's help, accomplish many things that make a difference in this community by reaching out to the lost and providing them an avenue of hope. The people you will find at at the Putnam City church of Christ are people who love each other, love Jesus and love the Bible. Service Projects:
Every Sunday evening after a thirty minute assembly we spend an hour together engaged in service projects. Our projects are organized into three categories which we rotate through on a monthly basis - i.e. Meetinghouse, Membership and Missions. Meetinghouse projects include maintenance, cleaning and improvements to the meetinghouse. Membership projects include encouragement of shut-in or ailing members, prayer sessions and activities meant to further foster our relationships with one another. Missions projects include a variety of outreach and evangelism focused efforts. The Saturday before each Sunday Missions project we meet a couple of hours to do additional missions work as well. World Bible School:
We use World Bible School (WBS) online Bible study materials. WBS is a self paced by mail or online Bible study course. Students register online and Putnam City church members adopt them as students becoming their study helpers. Study helpers grade lessons submitted, aid in further understanding of the subjects being studied, building relationships through correspondence and helping students find a way to be baptized when they decide to do so. Memorial Outreach Garden
Our memorial outreach garden is meant to provide a peaceful, beautiful, informative and spiritually instructive outdoor space in the neighborhood conducive to rest and reflection. The plants in the garden are labeled with plaques indicating the kind of plant they are. When a plant has been added in memory of a member who has died it is also indicated on he plaque. The garden also includes two outreach boxes full of spiritually instructive Bible oriented materials free for the taking by our meetinghouse neighbors. On the top of one box is a place to deposit prayer requests.
