Retirement Ritual: Some say retirement is an invisible threshold. We wish to honor it as any other important milestone within the life of the church. Each retiree is invited to lay an item on the altar which symbolizes what they have retired from, walk through the retirement threshold, and share a farewell letter to their former working self.

Most of us tend to think of the second half of life as largely about getting old, dealing with health issues, and letting go of life, but the whole theme of our Sept worship theme is exactly the opposite. What looks like falling down can largely be experienced as “falling upward.” In fact, it is not a loss but somehow actually a gain, as we have all seen with elders who have come to their fullness.

At the end of this week’s “The Gospel of Loneliness” sermon,” we had homework.

Rev. Dwight Lee Wolter, in his book “The Gospel of Loneliness”, suggests six loneliness field trips that you can take and document by yourself.

These include 1) going to a museum alone, 2) going to a restaurant alone, 3) picnicking by yourself, 4) dancing solo, 5) vacationing alone, and 6) going out into the world to photograph loneliness.

Today I did the “go to a museum” alone at 1515 Lincoln Art Gallery in OKC. Have you taken any “loneliness field trips” lately? How did it go?
