Good morning, church family! Here is Rev. Cali Eck's Advent devotional for Friday, December 20th:
Isaiah 40:1-2
1 “Comfort, O comfort My people,” says your God. 2 “Speak kindly to Jerusalem; And call out to her, that her warfare has ended, That her iniquity has been removed, That she has received of the Lord’s hand Double for all her sins.”
There are so many emotions that surface in this season. Many people find it difficult to get through due to the loss of loved ones or the feelings of loneliness. I have lost both my parents and a sister. The comfort that comes from God when I lean on him. We have the Holy Spirit, who will walk with us through the dark times.
Most who read this know that I love hymns, and I genuinely love the hymns of Advent. They call us into the season of waiting and put to a tune in the cry of our hearts. The third verse of the hymn, "Come Thou Almighty King," speaks to the longing of our very souls.
"Come, holy Comforter, thy sacred witness bear in the glad hour. Thou who almighty art, now rule in every heart, and ne'er from us depart, Spirit of power."
This theme of comfort is the work of the Holy Spirit. It connects to this passage in Isaiah 40, which is read during Advent. “Comfort, O Comfort My people….” The whole psalm speaks hope for the people of Israel and for you and me.
The incarnation is at the heart of the Story of Christmas as Christ's followers. God chose not just to send a gift to humanity but to become the gift of salvation for humanity. This Advent, let us recognize that in Jesus, we have received the greatest gift that comforts us in our sadness and brokenness, who forgives and transforms us into his likeness so we can be the gift of comfort to someone living in darkness.
God of comfort, I thank you for comforting me in times of sorrow. In my sorrow, you remind me that you are with me. Thank you for your abiding love that transforms me. When I am sad, lonely, anxious, or broken, I know you are the strength to see me through. Your forgiveness and love bring joy everlasting. Thank you. I pray in the name of Jesus, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to the glory of God. Amen.
