The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) gathered June 10-12 for their Spring Plenary Assembly in Orlando, Florida. The assembly began with the bishops sending prayers and a message to the Holy Father. Archbishop Paul S. Coakley addressed the body of bishops for the first time as Conference president.

“The words of Christ that whatever we do to the least among us, we do to him, not only remind us of our duty as Christians, but of the dignity and value the Lord has instilled in every person created in his image. Reminding ourselves of this truth will renew hope in the hardest of hearts.” - Address of His Excellency Paul S. Coakley, president of the USCCB.

Archbishop Paul S. Coakley of Oklahoma City, in his first address to the bishops as USCCB president, spoke of how “the truth of Christ must be proclaimed all the more confidently” to restore hope that is under threat from wide-ranging attacks on human dignity and polarization “within our country, and even within our Church.”

In response, he called for preaching that “life is a gift from God,” the “cultivation of interpersonal relationships and conversations between those who may disagree,” and acting on the bishops’ mission directive “to reach out to the disaffiliated and the unaffiliated.” But above all, Archbishop Coakley reminded his brother bishops, “It is the love flowing from the Sacred Heart of Jesus that feeds our hope.”

(OSV News) — At their spring assembly in Orlando, Florida, the U.S. bishops focused on strengthening the Church’s mission and addressing challenges while keeping the Sacred Heart of Jesus as the key to personal and public transformation in focus.

One of the ways we Catholics punctuate our lives and mark time with our faith is through liturgical seasons and feasts. In addition to seasons such as Lent and Easter, Advent and Christmas, we also dedicate certain months to fostering various devotions that further integrate our lives with the pract...

"Archbishop Paul S. Coakley of Oklahoma City incensed the altar after processing in from the thick humidity and cloudy skies of a typical Orlando afternoon outside the shrine. The president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops was joined on the altar by bishops and deacons of the Orlando Diocese.

‘Clothe us, Lord God, with the virtues of the heart of your son, and set us aflame with his love,’ the archbishop prayed in opening the Mass."
