A statement from Archbishop Coakley on today's report from the Holy See on decision-making and allegations involving Theodore McCarrick:

“The revelations included in the report on former cardinal Theodore McCarrick are shocking and disturbing to our sense of decency. This behavior should not exist in the Catholic Church or anywhere and certainly shouldn’t be allowed to continue for decades. While the Catholic Church in the United States and the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City have worked diligently to create safe environments for all people within the Church, this report is another challenge for us to stay focused on preventing abuse from ever occurring and acting swiftly and justly if an allegation is received. I am grateful for our dedicated clergy, religious men and women and laypeople who continue to lead the way in our efforts to remain transparent and to protect children, young people and the most vulnerable from such abuses. I invite everyone to pray for survivors of abuse and their families with the hope that they may find peace and healing.”

-- Most Rev. Paul S. Coakley, Archbishop of Oklahoma City

It is important to understand his comments about civil unions are most likely in the context of these pastoral concerns. They are not a change in the truth or teaching of the Catholic Church, which recognizes the dignity of marriage as between a man and a woman as constituted by the Creator and affirmed by Scripture and natural law throughout history.

“We are all called – just like the Good Samaritan – to become neighbours to others, overcoming prejudices, personal interests, historic and cultural barriers. We all, in fact, are co-responsible in creating a society that is able to include, integrate and lift up those who have fallen or are suffering. Love builds bridges and ‘we were made for love.’ Recognize Christ in the face of every excluded person.” — Pope Francis in new encyclical, Fratelli Tutti.

Fraternity and social friendship are the ways the Pontiff indicates to build a better, more just and peaceful world, with the contribution of all: ...
