The Baptist Messenger The first issue of The Baptist Messenger came off the press on May 15, 1912. The Messenger is currently the third largest newspaper in Oklahoma.

In late 1909, Clarence P. Stealey, of West Virginia moved to Oklahoma to start a Baptist paper. It became one of the most widely circulated newspapers in the entire Oklahoma territory. When the Oklahoma Southern Baptist Convention held its annual meeting in May of 1912, copies of the first edition of the Baptist Messenger were distributed. The inaugural edition on May 15, 1912, contained stories a

bout the work of the Foreign and Home Mission Boards, Christian education, teaching about Christian doctrine and theology, and the Oklahoma Baptist Orphans’ Home. Within five years, the 16-page, weekly publication had a statewide circulation of approximately 5,000. By 1919, the convention’s board determined that the Baptist Messenger should become its official news journal and purchased the newspaper from Stealey for $5,000 under the condition that he would continue to serve as editor. Since Stealey’s era, nine others have served as editor of the newspaper. Today, the Baptist Messenger is mailed to more than 42,000 households every issue, making it the third-largest newspaper in the state of Oklahoma. In November 2011, Messenger Digital was launched, a full online edition of The Baptist Messenger, along with the Messenger Mobile companion app. On May 15, 2012, The Messenger celebrated its 100th year. Oklahoma Baptists have always shown an unwavering commitment to advancing the Gospel within our state. A significant and consistent way this has been accomplished is by engaging in cooperative giving to support missions through the Edna McMillan State Missions Offering (SMO).

Named after one of Oklahoma's own missions pioneers, Edna McMillan, the SMO supports ministries making an eternal impact in Oklahoma. The two ministries highlighted for this year's SMO are the Oklahoma Baptist University (OBU) Prison Divinity Program and Ministerial Crisis Care.

Nourish Catering: Showing Hospitality Through Culinary Arts 🍳🥗⏲️

Hospitality can be shown in many ways. Each person has their own special way to be hospitable, but the most common way is by providing a warm meal. Through Oklahoma City, Putnam City's (PCBC) Community Bridges outreach program, Executive Chef Jeff Dalton and his wife, Lindsey, of Nourish Catering have started a ministry where food is more than a meal. It's a ministry.

Nourish was officially founded in October 2025, but Dalton has been in the food industry as a chef for more than 15 years working at hotels, a variety of restaurants and country clubs. He first went to culinary school to pursue his love of cooking, but while there he realized his true passion lies in service to others.

Floating Faith: Oklahoma Missionaries Reach Amazon River People with the Gospel

Few people can say they have lived in a floating house on the Amazon River, but Don and Dawn Friesen are among those rare few. Since 2014, the Friesens have lived and worked in Brazil using humanitarian efforts, prayer and Bible storying to reach the M people with the Gospel.

Don and Dawn not only live in a floating house, but they also use an aluminum boat named Lottie as their primary mode of transportation to reach their people group living along the rivers of the Amazon.

"Almost everywhere we travel here in Brazil is by boat. Not everyone on the water travels with a light so other people can see them. The rivers can be dangerous at night," Dawn said.

God opened way for Oklahoma Baptist chaplains to quickly reach Ground Zero after 9/11

Within hours of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, leaders with Oklahoma Baptist Disaster Relief were preparing to send chaplains to New York City, where grief and loss was deep and spiritual care was urgently needed.

The mission required more than willing chaplains. It required access to airspace that had gone silent after the Federal Aviation Administration grounded flights nationwide. God opened a door through Northwest Aero Services in Enid, owned by Elaine Johns.

Youth Evangelism Conference Encourages Students to be ‘Living Loud’ in Their Faith ✝️📣

On Aug. 8 and 15, more than 1,000 teenagers were encouraged to be "Living Loud" in their faith at the Youth Evangelism Conference (YEC). Students from 87 churches gathered at ten locations around Oklahoma: Ardmore, First; Elk City, First; Enid, First; Guymon, Sunset Lane; Lawton, First; OKC, Putnam City; Pryor, Life Fellowship; Talihina, Kiamichi Baptist Camp; Tulsa, South Tulsa and Woodward, Lincoln Avenue. During the conference, 10 students made professions of faith.

Pray for Central Asian Peoples

Central Asia is comprised of Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. Central Asians are experiencing deep grief and suffering because of war, repressive laws, and natural disasters. Islam is the predominant religion in Central Asia and many who choose to follow Jesus are persecuted for “betraying” their former faith, traditions, and family.
