Dharma Center Of Oklahoma

Dharma Center Of Oklahoma Dharma Center of Oklahoma 2745 NW 40th St Oklahoma City, OK 73112 (405) 943-5030 Rev. Chris Peters The path of Buddhism is inclusive and available to all.

Our purpose is to provide a place of meditation and spiritual growth through the study and practice of Buddhist principles. We seek to support each other and our community in the development of awareness, compassion and peace. Our goal is to have a teaching/practice center where we can join with others to discover and celebrate spiritual growth. We endeavor to share our experiences with others to

build a bond of integrity and strength within our community. A positive approach to learning that can be taken out into the world. Because we are all connected, we practice responsibility in all aspects of our lives. When you cast a stone into the water, the ripples extend far beyond the original action. So, the effects of our actions often reach further than we realize. Through increased awareness and learning how to live in the moment, we have the chance to gain wisdom and compassion for ourselves and others.

~~~ Spring and Fall Ohigan Explained ~~~
The equinox of spring and fall are celebrated in the Buddhist tradition as Ohigan. We gather for special services of life appreciation - remembrance prayers for our ancestors. The Japanese word “Higan” means “that side” as opposed to “this side” or “Shigan”. We travel from here, the “Saha” world, or world of suffering, to the other side - one of eternal peace and tranquility. (Buddha and Nirvana)
In Japan during the early Heian era, they would recite the sutra at local temples. The people believed that these days were the easiest time to cross from this shore to the other. They divided the week – the first 3 days, then the 4th day was for visiting the cemetery and services for the ancestors. This was followed by the final 3 days of the week.
On these days of the year, the length of day and night are equal. During the spring, it is said that all creatures are awakened and in the fall, it is the time to thank our families and remember those who have passed.
(The photos in this post are from our Spring Ohigan service at The Dharma Center of Oklahoma on Sunday, March 15th.)
