Future Things

I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us
- Romans 8:18

There are many things we do not know about the end of this life or the end of the world. But God has given us all the assurance we need in order to look joyfully, expectantly forward.

Paul knew enough about what was coming to say, I reckon -- an accounting term, meaning he had taken a careful inventory, done the calculations, and come to a careful and reliable conclusion. And what Paul was comparing was the sufferings of this time (with which he was intimately and personally acquainted) and the glory to come for every believer in Jesus Christ.

As Paul added up the multiple trials, heartaches, losses, and sorrows of this world and carefully considered this sum in relation to the glory afterwards, he came to this stunning realization: the two should not even be compared, because the amount of the one is so far greater than the mass of the other.

Anyone who has experienced even a fraction of the pain that this world holds will find this hard to imagine. We cannot conceive of a happiness so deep, a pleasure so complete, a glory so glorious that our grief here is swallowed up by it. But God does not ask us to fathom such a claim; he simply requires that by faith we believe it.

Are you living by faith in the enormity of glory, in the expansive joy that is found in the presence of Jesus?

Women of Faith

One thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her
- Luke 10:42

One thing is needful. How difficult it is to learn this lesson!

Martha meant well, and so do we oftentimes. There are a thousand things that call for our attention each day. There are obligations to fulfill, schedules to be kept, and people to be pleased. But in the midst of the daily hubbub, whether you are a homemaker or a chief financial officer, do not forget that one thing is needful

A promising career is not needful. The approval of peers is not needful. A well-padded retirement account is not needful. Even the affection of family members is not needful. One thing -- and one thing alone -- is absolutely essential.

What could possibly be that important, in every culture and for every person? Jesus tells us: it was exactly what Mary hath chosen. The one thing that is needful is to sit "at Jesus' feet" and "hear his word" (v.39).

We must make time in the busyness of our daily lives to spend at the feet of Jesus, submitting ourselves to his will and opening our hearts to him in prayer. We must be willing to say "No" to the countless distractions that threaten to pull us away from him throughout the day. We must hear his word, which he has shared and preserved for us in the Bible.

Communion with Jesus Christ is not just part of Christianity, it is Christianity. It is not just part of life, it is the only life that matters. It is the purpose for which you were created and it is the only thing which shall not be taken away from you by disaster or even death.

Christian Living

These things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous
- 1 John 2:1

The Christian's goal, John says quite frankly, is total sanctification, complete victory over sin in our own life.

John is not satisfied, and neither is the Holy Spirit who inspired him to write these words, with a half-way Christianity. It is not good enough to live a more holy life than your next door neighbor; it is not good enough to simply avoid the "big" sins like murder or adultery.

No, John insists, my goal for you is for you to completely mortify the sin that so easily besets you. Pride, gluttony, worry, fear, selfishness, lying, and lust should all meet with a zero-tolerance determination in our spirit. We should never be content to allow any sin to set up camp in our heart without consistent opposition and a concerted effort to root it out.

But almost in the same breath John also gives us this blessed reminder, knowing that sin will never be completely defeated this side of the grave: if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.

Although we are not righteous, Jesus Christ was perfectly righteous on our behalf. When we sin, we have an advocate with our heavenly Father who pleads his righteousness on our behalf.

The Christian life, then, is an mixture of dissatisfaction with sinful self and complete satisfaction in the righteousness of Christ. It is striving and resting, improving and perfection.

Call to Worship

Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honor and glory for ever and ever
- 1 Timothy 1:17

Worship God, first of all, because he is the King eternal. He always has been and always will be the sovereign of the universe. He never relinquishes his throne, at any time or in any place. He is not only King over America, he is King over Asia; he is not only King in the 21st century, but he was King in the 1st century and will be King throughout eternity.

Worship God, second, because he is the King immortal. Paul uses the same Greek word here as Peter uses to describe our "incorruptible" inheritance in heaven (1 Peter 1:4). Not only will God last forever, he will never decay or diminish even one little bit. He is imperishable in his essence and in his existence, in his character and in his longevity.

Worship God also because he is invisible. What a strange attribute to list as praise-worthy, we might think -- until we reconsider our perception of reality. We often think of things that are invisible as being less real (like a ghost) than what we can see and feel. But God is invisible because he is more real than what we can see and feel.

Jesus walked through walls in his glorified body, as you and I might walk through a fog or mist. It is an invisible enemy that we are actually wrestling against, Paul reminds us (Ephesians 6:12), and it is the invisible God who can give us the victory in our struggle.

Finally, worship God because he is the only wise God -- wisdom is found nowhere else, and in no one else, in this universe. All true wisdom comes from him, and so all true praise should go to him.

Prayer

When ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses
- Mark 11:25

The only way any prayer is ever heard is through the righteous imputation and intercession of Jesus Christ. Yet it is Jesus who here reminds us that successful prayers are accompanied by holy lives.

If you have anything against any one, Jesus says, forgive them from your heart before you seek to pray to your heavenly Father. Do not presume to ask for a forgiveness that you are not yourself willing to grant others.

We garner this insightful view of prayer, then, from Jesus himself -- your prayer life is both indestructible and delicate, it is both independent of your actions and yet influenced by the decisions you make.

You see, the access we have to God through Jesus Christ is based entirely on his goodness, not your own. For this reason, you can always pray to God, come boldly to God, when you are clinging to the perfect and sufficient work of Christ on your behalf.

On the other hand, scripture is very clear that our way of life -- what we do and fail to do -- will greatly influence our communion with God. Paul admonishes husbands to honor and cherish their wives "that your prayers be not hindered" (1 Peter 3:7). Jesus warns not to even bother praying if we are harboring resentment or bitterness or unforgiveness in our hearts.

Today, then, dear believer, go boldly in Christ's name to the throne of grace, and freely love and forgive others so that your prayers are not hindered.
