IMAGINE PASTORAL PRAYER
By Rev. David Wheeler
Sept. 6, 2026

God of holy imagination,

We bring you our joys and our griefs, our gratitude and our fear, our hopes for the world and our
weariness with the world as it is.

Teach us to imagine as the prophets imagined: a world where the vulnerable are safe, the hungry are fed,
enemies are reconciled, and no child lives in fear. But do not let imagination become an escape. Give us
courage to turn vision into practice—to widen a table, defend a neighbor, challenge an injustice, and make
peace where we can.

When cynicism tells us nothing will change, remind us of the green shoot rising from the stump. Keep that
stubborn hope alive in us, until the world we imagine begins to resemble the world you desire.

Amen

🧡 WEAR ORANGE TOMORROW! 🧡

September is Hunger Action Month, and New Covenant is joining people across the country in wearing orange to raise awareness about hunger.

For us, this one hits close to home. Through our Food Pantry and Breakfast Before the Bell, feeding our neighbors is already an important part of who we are.

So wear some orange and join us for worship tomorrow at 10:45 a.m. as we celebrate the work already being done—and recommit ourselves to the hope that no neighbor should ever go hungry. 🧡

Coat of Many Colors (Sermon: August 30, 2026)
Scripture Reading: James 2:1-7

Who gets to decide what—or who—is truly valuable?

In this week's sermon from our summer series, Songs That Changed the World, we explore Dolly Parton’s deeply personal autobiographical classic, "Coat of Many Colors," alongside the piercing words of James 2 on the sin of favoritism. Stitched together from discarded rags by her mother in the mountains of East Tennessee, Dolly’s coat was mocked by schoolmates who only saw scraps and poverty. But where others saw deficiency, Dolly saw time, care, devotion, and love.

Centuries earlier, James challenged the early church with an uncomfortable reality check: what happens when someone in fine clothes and gold rings walks into your gathering, followed by someone in worn, dirty clothes? When we reserve our best seats for the influential while pushing the vulnerable to the margins, James warns that we have imported the world's broken hierarchies right into the sanctuary of God.

Coat of Many Colors Pastoral Prayer
August 30, 2026
By Rev. David Wheeler

Holy One, Dolly Parton once sang about a coat made from scraps—pieces that looked poor to some, but looked like love to the child who wore them.

Most of us know what it is to feel a little like that coat: patched together, imperfect, carrying stories others may not understand.

So teach us to see what love sees. Remind us that worth is not measured by appearance, status, or what the world can price.

And stitch us into a community where no one is ashamed of the coat they came in wearing, and everyone knows they belong.

We pray in the name of Jesus, who kept seeing worth in people others had already dismissed. Amen.

Love isn't just a feeling—it's a way of life. When we seek the flourishing of others, stand with the marginalized, speak truth, and refuse to dehumanize those we disagree with, we're living out love in its truest form. This is love made flesh.
