The Martyrdom of St. John the Baptist
Aug. 29, 2026

GOSPEL
Mark 6:14–29

King Herod heard of it, for Jesus’ name had become known. Some said, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead. That is why these miraculous powers are at work in him.” But others said, “He is Elijah.” And others said, “He is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old.” But when Herod heard of it, he said, “John, whom I beheaded, has been raised.” For it was Herod who had sent and seized John and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, because he had married her. For John had been saying to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” And Herodias had a grudge against him and wanted to put him to death. But she could not, for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he kept him safe. When he heard him, he was greatly perplexed, and yet he heard him gladly.

But an opportunity came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his nobles and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee. For when Herodias’s daughter came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests. And the king said to the girl, “Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will give it to you.” And he vowed to her, “Whatever you ask me, I will give you, up to half of my kingdom.” And she went out and said to her mother, “For what should I ask?” And she said, “The head of John the Baptist.” And she came in immediately with haste to the king and asked, saying, “I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.” And the king was exceedingly sorry, but because of his oaths and his guests he did not want to break his word to her. And immediately the king sent an executioner with orders to bring John’s head. He went and beheaded him in the prison and brought his head on a platter and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother. When his disciples heard of it, they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.

COLLECT OF THE DAY

Almighty God, You gave Your servant John the Baptist to be the forerunner of Your Son, Jesus Christ, in both his preaching of repentance and his innocent death. Grant that we, who have died and risen with Christ in Holy Baptism, may daily repent of our sins, patiently suffer for the sake of the truth, and fearlessly bear witness to His victory over death; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH
Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost (Proper 17A)

In peace, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

That we would place all vengeance in the hands of God, who is ever righteous and faithful, and who will always carry out justice and deliver His people out of the hand of the wicked, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For all pastors and missionaries, that they might say with Jeremiah, “Hear the Word of the Lord,” and faithfully proclaim that Word to us, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For the households of this congregation, that all may live in love that issues from a pure heart, a good conscience and a sincere faith, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For all who make, execute and judge our laws, that their eyes may be turned toward the Lord; and that they would receive wisdom and strength to faithfully carry out their duties, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For the sick and suffering, that they might have relief from pain and the courage to endure whatever crosses and tribulations the Lord chooses to lay upon them, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For all who receive the Supper today, that they may faithfully receive it for the forgiveness of sins and be sustained until Christ returns in glory, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. Matthew 16:21–28

From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. For the riches and wisdom of the Lord; for knowledge of the Lord through His Word; and for trust in His grace and favor, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For the Church, that all servants of the Church may fulfill the ministries committed to them; and that we may each boldly confess Christ before the world, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For all families, that even as God blessed and multiplied Abraham, all mothers with child might be protected and all fathers equipped to lead and raise their households in the fear and love of God, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For our president, Congress, governor and all civil leaders in their pursuit of peace and unity; and for all judges and magistrates in their pursuit of justice with mercy, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For the suffering, that the Lord, our life, would sustain and strengthen them; and for those who mourn, that the Lord would console them with the promise of everlasting life in Christ, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

Matthew 15:21–28

Jesus went away from there and withdrew to the district of Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and was crying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely oppressed by a demon.” But he did not answer her a word. And his disciples came and begged him, saying, “Send her away, for she is crying out after us.” He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” But she came and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, help me.” And he answered, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.” She said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.” Then Jesus answered her, “O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed instantly.
