Odenville United Methodist Church Livestreaming Page Livestreaming Page - Weekly Sunday Worship Service at 11:00am

06/30/2024

Greetings. Just wanted to let those persons who view our worship service via livestream know that we may not be able to use Facebook as a streaming platform any longer. Facebook is changing policies regarding religious sites. We are exploring other options and hope to have a solution soon. We can still record the service and post it after the service or we might can use a personal Facebook account. If we use a personal Facebook account tomorrow, you might be able to view the service live on my page - James Haskins. If not, it will posted on the church’s page after the service. Sorry that this might create some inconvenience for those who view our service. The other option is to come join us in person at the church. We hope if you are able that you will consider that as your option. Thank you for your kind patience.

Matthew 6:25-34 records, a portion of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. Jesus says, “Don’t be anxious about anything.” Worrying is one of those habits that we can’t seem to get a grip on sometimes. Situations and circumstances plague us to the point that we are often physically or mentally or even spiritually affected.

I have kept a book on my desk for years by Richard Carlson called, “Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff, and It’s All Small Stuff.” But it’s usually the small stuff that gets us worse than the big stuff.

Jesus’ solution - found in verse 33-34 “33 Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions. Don't worry about missing out. You'll find all your everyday human concerns will be met. 34 "Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don't get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow.” (The Message)

You are invited to join us for morning worship at Odenville United Methodist Church tomorrow at 11:00am as we study this passage from Matthew’s Gospel. Join us in person at 126 Alabama Street in Odenville or via livestream on the link of our page.

From Nothing to Something

You’re more than statistical chance, a marriage of heredity and society. Thanks to God, you have been “sculpted from nothing into something” (Psalm 139:15 MSG). He made you you-nique.

Secular thinking, as a whole, doesn’t buy this. Society simply says, “You can be anything you want to be.” But can you? God never prefabs or mass-produces people. “I make all things new,” he declares (Revelation 21:5 NKJV). So, you can do something no one else can do in a fashion no one else can do it. “Make a careful exploration of who you are and the work you have been given, and then sink yourself into that” (Galatians 6:4 MSG).
When you do the most what you do the best, you put a smile on God’s face. And what could be better than that?

The With Us God

The babe of Bethlehem. Immanuel. Remember the promise of the angel? “‘Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,’ which is translated, ‘God with us’” (Matthew 1:23 NKJV).
Immanuel. The name appears in the same Hebrew form as it did two thousand years ago. “Immanu” means “with us.” “El” refers to Elohim, or God. Not an “above us God” or a “somewhere in the neighborhood God.” He came as the “with us God.” God with us. Not with the rich or with the religious. But God with us. All of us. Russians, Germans, Buddhists, Mormons, truck drivers, librarians. God with us.
Prophets weren’t enough. Apostles wouldn’t do. Angels won’t suffice. God sent more than miracles and messages. He sent himself; he sent his Son.

In the Beginning

In Matthew 1:23, God called himself Immanuel, which means “God with us.” Not just “God made us.” Not just “God thinks about us.” Not just “God above us.” But God with us. God where we are. He breathed our air and walked this earth. God…with…us!

Bethlehem was just the beginning. Jesus has promised a repeat performance. Bethlehem, Act 2. No silent night this time, however. The skies will open and trumpets will blast and a new kingdom will begin. He will empty the tombs and melt the winter of death. Death, you die! Life, you reign! The manger dares us to believe the best is yet to be.
I love Christmas because it reminds us how “God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God” (Roman 8:28).

The Plate Runs Over

“Give us this day our daily bread.” What a statement of trust!
Some days the plate runs over. God keeps bringing out more food, and we keep loosening up our belt. A promotion. A privilege. A friendship. A gift. A lifetime of grace. An eternity of joy. The Psalmist said, “You serve me a six-course dinner right in front of my enemies. You revive my drooping head; my cup fills with blessing” (Psalm 23:5 MSG).
And then there are those days when, well, we have to eat our broccoli. Our daily bread could be tears or sorrow or discipline. Our portion may include adversity as well as opportunity.
So the next time your plate has more broccoli than apple pie, just remember who prepared the meal. Even Jesus was given a portion he found hard to swallow. But with God’s help, he did. And with God’s help, you can too.

FROM THE COUNCIL OF BISHOPS OF THE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH:

“Give Peace A Chance”

Christ’s true disciples must work for peace: build it and not just keep it; live it and not just aspire for it. If Christ is our peace, then peace must be imperative. (Resolution 6129: The United Methodist Church and Peace)

The United Methodist Church Council of Bishops, along with millions of people across the globe, are weeping and praying for the people of the Holy Land. We decry the October 7, 2023, attack by Hamas and the continuing loss of life of Israelis and Palestinians including thousands of children.

We cannot remain silent while a preventable humanitarian crisis in Gaza unfolds with no safe haven for the citizens in Gaza or the volunteers and agencies seeking to prevent starvation and to treat the wounded.

We value all life. We encourage every effort toward a peaceful solution. We call for the release of hostages and for the killing to stop. We also call for the immediate allowance of unrestricted humanitarian assistance. As Bishops of the Church, we denounce acts of and the proliferation of antisemitism, Islamophobia, and hate crimes that may begin with words and often turn to violence directed toward persons whose race, ethnicity or religion is disparaged.

We cannot stand by as though God is not weeping when the innocent, including children, are dying. We cannot abandon the way of Peace.

May we find ways to listen to the stories of those most directly impacted by this centuries-old conflict. We commit to join all people in creating life-giving ways to journey toward peace with justice for all.

Let God be God

I’m more landlubber than a sailor, but I’ve puttered around in a bass boat enough to know the secret for finding land in a storm. You don’t aim at another boat. You certainly don’t stare at the waves. You set your eyes on an object unaffected by the wind—a light on the shore—and you go straight toward it. You see, the light is unaffected by the storm.
In seeking God you do the same. You focus on “a cut above” any storm life may bring. Like Job, you find peace in the pain. Like Job, you cover your mouth and sit still. Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still, and know that I am God.” A command with a promise. Be still. Cover your mouth. Bend your knees. And, as a result, you will know that I am God. So just be still. Be quiet, be open, be willing. Let God be God!
