Celebrating 250 Years of God's Grace

There were many different reasons people migrated to this land and to the States that declared independence from King George III in 1776. Some came fleeing religious persecution. Some fled famine. And still today, people flee their homelands — from oppressive tyrants, from violence, from hunger and suffering, hoping for a better life.

As we give thanks this Sunday for 250 years of God's grace and sustenance, we're invited to reflect on what it means to call this land home — not as something we simply received, but as something we're called to steward and share.

I once lived in an old building called Divinity Hall, once a dormitory for seminarians. Just outside my corner room was a small wall plaque noting that Ralph Waldo Emerson had lived there and once preached in the chapel down the hall. Emerson, like Henry David Thoreau, was a leading voice of the American Renaissance, and he described this country simply: "America is another name for opportunity."

That's still true today. It takes courage to uproot your life and cross an ocean toward the unknown. And in some sweet, old-fashioned way, America still holds onto things worth holding onto — even something as small as a real key in a door, in a world that's gone digital.

Looking back over 250 years, we're still very much in the early chapters of this great experiment — a nation still being built, still learning, still working out what freedom and justice for all truly means. Perhaps it's only the first inning.

This Sunday at 9:30 am, we'll gather to give thanks for the journey so far, and to pray that the next chapters — for our children, and their children after them — carry this legacy of freedom forward, right here through San Luis Rey Valley UMC.

Come celebrate with us, and give thanks together for our small part in this great, ongoing story of freedom and justice for all people on earth.

Heavenly Blessings,
Rev. Donnie Bae

UMEA Director, Rev. Dr. Kent A. Lundy, visited UMEA endorsed Navy Chaplain Choi at Camp Pendleton, CA. This visit bolstered the connections The United Methodist Church shares with those serving beyond the local church. UMEA clergy are everywhere!
